Located on the XII Corps line on Culp’s Hill, the 29th Ohio’s monument isn’t one of Gettysburg’s most spectacular, but it honors a hard-fighting regiment.
Members of the XII Corps 2nd division, 1st brigade, the 29th Ohio was nicknamed the Giddings Regiment in honor of Ohio congressman Joshua R. Giddings. It was recruited from around the northeastern Ohio area, the companies principally coming from Ashtabula, Summit, and Medina counties. The monument is located along Slocum Avenue.
At Gettysburg, the 29th Ohio had 332 members of which 7 were killed and 31 were wounded including the regimental commander, Capt. Wilbur F. Stevens.
Interestingly, Stevens name appears nowhere on the 29th Ohio’s monuments. Raus’s book “Generation on the March” hypothesizes that this is because the regimental adjuctant “thought him a coward” at the battle of Cedar Mountain (August 9, 1862).
