The 66th Ohio Regiment’s Monument is on the summit of Culp’s Hill (nearest to Slocum Avenue), near the War Department observation tower.
The 66th was organized at Camp McArthur in Urbana during December 1861. The men came from the counties of Champaign, Delaware, Logan, and Union. They were members of the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Division of the Twelfth Corps at Gettysburg.
Numbering 316 men at the battle, the 66th Ohio suffered the loss of 17 wounded. Amongst those was Major Joshua G. Palmer, a dentist from Urbana. A marker near the main monument indicates where Major Palmer was mortally wounded during the fight for Culp’s Hill.
