10th Massachusetts Infantry

Members of the Sixth Army Corps, the 10th Massachusetts regiment was raised from the counties of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden and mustered in during June 1861.  The commander at Gettysburg was Lt. Col. Joseph B. Parsons (1828-1906), a native of Northampton; a farmer prior to the War, after the War he served as his hometown’s chief of police.

The 10th Massachusetts numbered just over 400 at Gettysburg and suffered modest casualties in action on July 2, 1863.

The monument, which features a granite base and a bronze stack of soldiers’ rifles, sits on Sedgwick Avenue near the staute to that officer.
