61st New York Infantry
The 61st New York Infantry were nicknamed the “Clinton Guards.” Raised from New York City and from Madison County, they mustered in during the fall of 1861. Their commander at Gettysburg was a Swedish immigrant named Lt. Col. Knut Oscar Broady (1832-1922). Broady had seen prior service with the Swedish army and navy.
The 61st was a small regiment having less than 150 present at Gettysburg. They were engaged in the Wheatfield on July 2 and suffered over 60 casualties. Their monument is a simple stone that marks their position on July 2. The main feature is the state crest.
