The monument to the 29th Pennsylvania is located on Culp’s Hill. A rather simple but elegant stone monument it features a large eagle balanced on top of a cannon ball. The eagle’s wings are outspread. The monument also features the state seal.
Known as the “Jackson Regiment” the unit was commanded by Col. William Rickards (1824-1900) of Philadelphia. The unit was mainly recruited from Philadelphia and numbered just under 500 at Gettysburg, making it one of the larger units in the XII Corps. It suffered significant casualties in the fighting on Culp’s Hill.
The monument marks the position of the regiment on July 2.
