81st Pennsylvania Infantry
One of the small regiments that made up Cross’ brigade and fought in the Wheatfield on July 2d with the rest of Caldwell’s Division, the 81st Pennsylvania was raised from the city of Philadelphia and the counties of Carbon and Luzerene in the fall of 1861. The commander at Gettysburg was Lt. Col. Amos Stroh (1821-1899), a moulder from Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. Stroh resigned his commission on July 22, 1863 because he was “unfit for service.”
The monument is rather simple. It features the famous Second Corps clover leaf at the top of the die. The die features a pair of crossed muskets and the state seal. The die also includes inscriptions explaining the regiment’s role and battles.
