145th Pennsylvania
Located in the woods surrounding the Wheatfield, the 145th Pennsylvania was recruited from the counties of Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Warren in the fall of 1862. Numbering just 228 at Gettysburg, the regiment was commanded by Col. Hiram L. Brown (1832-1880), a hotel keeper from Erie. When Brown was wounded on July 2, Capt. John W. Reynolds (1836-1925), a freight agent from Erie took command of the 145th until he too was wounded. The final commander was Capt. Moses W. Oliver (1833-1906), a teacher at the Normal School in Edinboro.
The monument to the 145th is located along Brooke Avenue near the Rose Farm. The monument’s main feature is a bronze staute of a youthful soldier advancing forward towards the enemy.
