80th New York Infantry

Posted to the Project on 22 Oct 07

The 80th New York was known also as the Ulster Guard or the 20th New York State Milita. It was raised from Ulster County in the late fall of 1861. The commander at Gettysburg was Col. Theodore B. Gates (1825-1911), a lawyer from Kingston.

The monument is rather plain except for the top of the die. The top of the die features a circular bronze plaque that reads “This Hand For My Country.” Other features of the monument include a short history of the regiment. The monument stands on Reynolds Avenue where the unit did the bulk of its fighting on the afternoon of July 1, 1863 in defense of McPherson Ridge. A secondary monument appears on Hancock Avenue marking the position on July 3, 1863 during Pickett’s Charge. (Marker, Hancock Avenue.)
