1st New York Artillery Battery L

1st New York Battery L was also known as Reynolds Battery after it’s commander, Capt. Gilbert H. Reynolds (1832-1913), a coachmaker from Rochester. Reynolds was wounded on July 1 and Lt. George Breck (1833-1925), a druggist also from Rochester, took command.

The battery was raised from Monroe County in the late fall of 1861 from the Union Grays milita unit. At Gettysburg, 16 men from Battery E 1st New York Light were attached. The battery was made up of 141 men and 6 Ordnance Rifles.

The main feature of the monument is a large First Corps badge circle with a bas relief of a cannon inside.

A secondary monument also stands on East Cemetery Hill marking the unit’s position on July 2, 1863.
