1st New York Artillery Battery I

1st New York Artillery Battery I was part of the XI Corps Artillery Brigade at Gettysburg. It was raised from Erie County near Buffalo as part of the “65th Milita” in the fall of 1861.

The commander at Gettysburg was Capt. Michael Wiedrich (1820-1899), a French born clerk in Buffalo.

The unit contained 141 men and 6 Ordnance Rifles.

The main feature of the unit’s monument is a bronze plaque placed between two columns.

The bronze relief plaque features an artilleryman loading a cannon while the battle swirls around him.

The unit monument is located on East Cemetery Hill and marks the position of the unit on July 1, 2, and 3, 1863.

I haven’t popped in lately to thank you for the Gettysburg monument series.

btw, speaking of the NY monuments, I’m assuming you know about the damage to the 6th New York back in October? Lightning struck one of the turrets and blasted it off. They’re estimating $100,000 or more for repairs. Google it and you’ll find photos and articles.
