 My g gramps was John Tewksbury from 1862 to 1865 went in as serg came out as acting comander Lt col , he was in charge of prisoner war camp at city point Maryland when the war ended. He left Mass and came to Illinois as railroad detective. He is buried at Green cemetary Bluffs Ilinois. Nobody in my family knew wher he came from except tombstone say 1 st mass cav. I went washinton and looked up hie military record, bingo, we now know the history, he road with custer at the battle of Aldie , they lost that day, the most killed in one day, i have been to the battle site  Ron Jackson]]></description>

The 1st Mass. Cavalry was rather literally chopped to bits during the Battle of Aldie, June 17, 1863.  It was left largely combat ineffective as a result, which is why it was assigned to serve as Uncle John&#039;s headquarters escort.

The monument on the battlefield at Gettysburg is an exact replica of the monument that regiment erected on the Snickersville Turnpike at Aldie.
