41st New York Infantry
The 41st New York consisted of nine companies at Gettysburg. Company F became the 9th New York Independent Battery. The regiment was nicknamed the “De Kalb Regiment.” It was raised from New York City, Philadelphia, and Essex County (New Jersey) in June of 1861.
Their ocmmander at Gettysburg was Lt. Col. Heinrich D. von Einsiedel (1832-1865), a German milita officer. He died of typhoid fever at Petersburg very shortly after the War had ended.
The monument is located on the slopes of East Cemetery Hill along Wainwright Avenue. The bronze collection of flags and the New York seal on the front of the monument are it’s most striking features. The capstone also features the number 41.
