United States Engineers

The monument honoring the United States Engineer detatchment is located along Pleasanton Avenue. The Engineer Brigade was commanded by General Henry Benham. It consisted of two New York units (the 15th and 50th) and a United States battalion. This monument honors the United States Battalion. It was commanded by Capt. George H. Mendell. The monument states:

“Engaged in arduous duties from June 13 to July 18 1863 bridging rivers and transporting pontoons to enable the Army to cross the Potomac River and its tributaries into Pennsylvania and to recross into Virginia.”
