Georgia State Monument
The Georgia State Monument is located on Seminary Ridge, just south of the Longstreet observation tower and the intersection of West Confederate Avenue with the Millerstown / Pumping Station Road. (Next door is the South Carolina monument.) The monument stands near the location where General Paul J. Semmes’ brigade of McLaws’ Division went into action at the Wheatfield.
Designed by Harry Sellers, this monument and an identical monument at Sharpsburg, were dedicated on September 21, 1961.
Money was appropriated from the Georgia legislature to erect the monuments.
The monument consists of Georgia blue granite. The simple shaft stands over 15.5 feet tall. It is adorned near the top with the state seal of Georgia. The monument contains a very simple inscription:
GEORGIA CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS
WE SLEEP HERE IN OBEDIENCE TO LAW
WHEN DUTY CALLED WE CAME
WHEN COUNTRY CALLED, WE DIED
The front and back of the monument are identical.
