Tennessee State Monument

The Tennessee State Monument was the last Confederate state monument to be placed along West/South Confederate Avenue (which runs the length of Seminary Ridge and encompasses the main battle line of Longstreet and Hill on July 2 and 3). The memorial was dedicated on July 2, 1982 at a cost of $25,000.00. The Tennessee monument is located in a large field on the east side of West Confederate Avenue, just south of the North Carolina Monument near A.P. Hill’s headquarters.
The face of the monument features three soldiers etched into the Carnelian Select Granite. The soldiers represent each of the three Tennessee regiments (all of which were part of Archer’s Brigade).
The three marble stars represent the divided regions of the state — east, central, west. The base of the monument is 16 feet long (Tennessee was the 16th state) and is carved in the outline of the state’s shape.
The reverse of the highly polished monument lists the different Tennessee regiments and their numbers and casualties at Gettysburg.
This is the only state monument built solely through private contributions.
