Photo Study: East Cemetery Hill
Posted to the Project on 20 Nov 08
Cemetery Hill is one of the most prominent landmarks on the Gettysburg battlefield. It is located on the the southern edge of Gettysburg, overlooking the town and the immediate area south of it. Several monuments are located here, including the large equestrian monuments to Generals Howard and Hancock.
Originally, the hill was known as “Raffensberger’s Hill;” it was named “Cemetery Hill” for the Evergreen Cemetery established on it’s summit in 1858. The Evergreen Cemetery and National Cemetery sides of the hill are known as “West Cemetery Hill” — the dividing line being the busy north-south Baltimore Pike.

Thanks for the wonderful photos of ECH Jenny. Probably my favourite spot on the fields at Gettysburg.
