The New Design

Posted to the Project on 08 Nov 08

Regular readers will note the new design.

I have been working on this new design for about 2 months now (one of the major and first steps was spinning off some of my subjects into their own blogs), and I decided I was ready to go live with it today.  I’m sure there will be some bugs, and I’m already reconsidering font size and design choices.  I also still need to reorganize my blogroll and conduct various housekeeping matters.

I decided that I wanted to feature JUST the monument project here.  My personal entries will now be posted at my photoblog.  My Hodgkin’s Lymphoma information has been moved to it’s own site.  For my running writings, you can visit Running Times Magazine. (You can read them for free, but I actually get paid for those!)

I think tightly focusing the blog this way — just on the monuments — was the way to go.  I still have my new photoblog for posting more personal, every day details.

Just wanted to add, I was inspired to finally finish this by the outstanding discussion about compiling information into a digital project that has been going on over at Harry’s Bull Runnings and at a few other related blogs, especially Robert Moore’s blog.  Brian of Behind Antietam on the Web and the outstanding Antietam on the Web has even set up a Wiki for future discussion of using the web to digitize history.  In case your curious.  I would love to eventually convert my A.P. Hill website for example into Web 2.0.

Please let me know what you think of the new design.  I think it is much cleaner, more efficent, and easier to navigate than the prior design was.

This is nice Jenny. I love the dropdown menu bars and the different ways to navigate your site!

    Hay it looks great.

Looks good. One suggestion though - the new text comes through on my computer in a light gray which doesn’t make for enough contrast with the white background. Maybe this is something that is correctable at my end of things though. If so, feel free to let me know how to adjust my settings accordingly.
(BTW, as I write this comment the text is appearing as nice dark lettering. More contrast = less eyestrain.

Continued success to you in all things!

Thanks for the constructive criticism, Phil. The font color and size was what I was looking to address. I have switched to a very dark shade of gray (nearly black) and changed the font from Verdana to Times New Roman would appears larger on the screen. I also added a little extra white space between the lines.

Anyone else with any comments, please leave them. If there is another way of navigating the site you would like added, I could look into trying to add another layer of categories/tags.

Very nice, Jenny! I appreciate all the open space and un-cluttered feeling. It’s about communicating clearly, right?

Also, I join you, a day late, in noting the birthday of Genl APHill on 9 Nov.

    Jenny,

I really like the new look, and think that that it’s much easier to navigate now than it was originally. Though I’ll miss the “off-topic” posts! 8^)
