100507 072 (by RunnerJenny) Two small stones mark the location where officers of the 27th Connecticut Regiment fell at Gettysburg during the fighting at the Wheatfield on July 2. This stone does not actually mark the location where Lt. Col. Henry Czar Merwin (September 17, 1839-July 2, 1863), commanding the regiment, fell. Instead, the regimental monument, surmounted by the eagle, is where Merwin is said to have fallen. Merwin was buried in New Haven.

The other marker to a 27th Connecticut officer marks the location where Capt. Jed Chapman fell. The Merwin Monument is located in the Wheatfield, near the Wheatfield Road. Chapman’s monument is located all the way across the Wheatfield, many yards away.
