Main Project

Father Corby at SunsetWelcome to Draw the Sword! You’re surfing the main project portion of the website where you’ll find the individual monument entries.

To find a monument, use the pull down menus located in the right sidebar. You can locate monuments in a number of ways. You can …

Find by Type. Looking for a specific type of monument? Perhaps you’d like to see all of the park’s equestrians for example? Use the “Find by Monument Type” pull down to find monuments categorized by specific type.

Find by Order of Battle. The “Order of Battle” is based around how a Civil War Army was organized. There are pull downs for both the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Using the Order of Battle pull downs, you can find a specific monument by Corps, Division, or Brigade.

Find by State. Would you like to see all the monuments from a specific state, such as all the Massachusetts monuments or all of the West Virginia monuments? Use the “State” pull down menu to bring up all of the monuments from a specific state.

Find by Nearby Road. Do you know what road the monument is located along? Or would you just like to tour the park and see what monuments are located where? The “Road” pull down will bring up all the monuments located along a specific road in the Park.

Other Stuff on the Battlefield. Tired of looking at monuments? Interested in farms, towers, or wildlife on the battlefield? Use the “Farms, Towers, and More” pull down to browse through such diverse photo entries as common battlefield wildlife to the park’s three remaining observation towers to the various battlefield farms and other structures.

What Each Monument Entry Contains. Each monument entry contains some basic information about the monument, including:

  • A color photograph taken by me between 2006 and 2012.
  • Basic details of the monument: when it was erected, basic description, location, inscription.
  • Capsule summary of the unit it represents: county raised, number present at Gettysburg, casualties, etc.
