The First Minnesota Infantry is honored by three monuments at Gettysburg, one on Cemetery Ridge, one on North Hancock Avenue, and one in the National Cemetery. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Installed 1893. Dedicated July 2, 1897. What is it made out of? Sculpture: bronze; Base: granite. Who made it? Fjelde, Jacob, 1859-1896, sculptor. What does it depict? Atop a tall square base stands a bronze figure of a infantryman advancing toward the enemy with his rifle raised. The granite base is adorned on the side with a bronze relief plaque depicting a group of infantrymen engaged in battle. The front of the base is adorned with a bronze seal. The base rests on three steps. What does it honor? It marks the spot where the First Regiment was ordered into battle on July 2, 1863. How …
