What does it depict? Composed of open bronze book with narrative inscription, resting on a lectern of polished red granite. 4′ high, tablet, 1’8″ x 2′. Lectern’s granite post is supported by a base of Gettysburg granite on which the bronze dedicatory tablet is mounted. An open book on a circular pedestal set within church steps.

What does it honor? Howell was born in Trenton, New Jersey and was a minister in the Presbyterian Church in northeastern Pennsylvania. He held staunch Unionist and abolitionist views. On March 13, 1862, he enlisted as the regimental chaplain of the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry in Philadelphia.

What is it made out of? Foundation: Concrete. Monument: Polished smooth sea-green granite. Plaque: Bronze.

What size is it? 36′ by 36′ base. Weight: 300 Pounds. Height 5’4″. Tablet measures 4 feet by 3 feet 8 inches.

Who made it? Albert Russell & Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Erected by the United States War Department.

What does it depict? Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base. Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet. On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.

What does it honor? One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope. Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.

July 2. About 10 A. M. relieved by Second Brigade Second Division Second Corps and placed in reserve. At 4 P. M. supported a battery of Eleventh Corps. At sunset moved to the support of Third Corps then returned to support of Eleventh Corps.

July 3. Moved to the rear of the cemetery early in the morning in support of Twelfth Corps. At 2 P. M. formed on right and rear of Third Division Second Corps and there remained until the close of the battle. The Brigade went into action with less than 1200 men.

Commander: Brig. Gen. Henry Baxter (September 8, 1821 – December 30, 1873) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. At the Battle of Gettysburg, his brigade resisted a Confederate assault from parts of Major General Robert Rodes’s division, slaughtering hundreds in a surprise attack on Colonel Alfred Iverson’s brigade, and held the north flank of the Union position for much of the day before retiring due to lack of ammunition. He was wounded four times during the war. He later served as President Grant’s Minister to Honduras. More about this officer.

It indicates the position occupied by the 97th New York Conkling Rifles when assisting the 104th New York in the repulse of the Confederates from the stone wall on the afternoon of July 1, 1863. Soon after, they counterattaked Iverson’s Confederate Brigade and captured 213 officers and men of the 20th North Carolina Infantry. The attack of Doles, Ramseur and O’Neal forced the Conkling Rifles to retreat to the town of Gettysburg.

The 97th New York Infantry was also known as Conkling Rifles. During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of Baxter’s Brigade in Robinson’s Division of the First Corps, Army of the Potomac.

Commander: Col. Charles Wheelock (1812-1865). Farmer and producer dealer in Boonville. Wounded and captured on July 1. He escaped on the march back through the mountains to rejoin his regiment. Died of disease in January 1865.

Accouterments include a book, trumpet, revolver, flag, drum, sword, rifle, hat, canteen and haversack. The flanking markers are flat topped and measure one foot square.

Relief elements include a draped flag and tondo of Daniel Webster in profile on the sculpture and a cartridge box, bayonet and scabbard on the base. The monument had a cost of $500.

What does it honor? It designates the place where seven companies of the regiment were placed behind the stone wall on July 1, 1863, pouring a deadly crossfire into Iverson’s brigade.

This monument cost $6,000.00 and was dedicated at a very large ceremony on July 1, 1888.

The 83rd New York Infantry was also known as City Guards. During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of Baxter’s Brigade in Robinson’s Division of the First Corps, Army of the Potomac. A Fighting 300 Regiment.

Commander: Lt. Col. Joseph A. Moesch (1829-1864). Born in Switzerland; became baker in New York City. Killed at the Wilderness.

About the Main Monument

When was it dedicated? September 3, 1889.

What is it made out of? Sculpture: white granite with bronze elements;Base: granite.

What size is it? Overall: approx. H. 13 ft. x Circum: 8 ft.

Who made it? Unknown, sculptor.

What does it depict? Sculpture depicts a branchless oak tree trunk from which various objects hang. These objects include a knapsack, cartridge box, rifle, Corps disk insignia, shield and State Seal. A bird perches on an upper branch where her nest and chick are located. Vines are draped around the lower portion of the trunk. The most notable feature of the monument is the bird’s nest with baby birds nestled inside while the mother bird keeps close watch over her brood. It is alleged that during the battle a soldier saw a robin’s nest tumble to the ground and he climbed up to replace it with the babies still alive inside. The “tree” stands fourteen feet high. Interestingly, the flank markers that mark the right and left flank of the regiment are also miniature tree stumps.

What does it honor? It indicates the position held by the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on the early afternoon of July 1, 1863, when attacked by Rodes’ Division until compelled to retreat.

What does it depict? Full-length figure of a uniformed Infantryman stands atop a pedestal and tiered base. The figure wears a mustache and holds his rifle in a ready, upright position. On the top tier on the base lies the regimental dog. Above the dog is a square State Seal relief tablet. It is the only monument in the Park that includes a portrait sculpture of the regiment’s dog.

What does it honor? It indicates the position held by the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry on the afternoon of July 1, 1863 until outflanked by the Confederates and forced to fall back.
