<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived early in the morning took position on the line from Cemetery Hill to Round Top and was the right Brigade of Division. Between 5 and 6 P. M. went with Division to Wheatfield and advanced in reserve until the Division had forced back the Confederates to the further end when the Brigade advanced on the left of Third Brigade across a marsh to crest of a wooded hill. The Union line along the Emmitsburg Road having soon thereafter been forced back by Brig. Gen. Semmes’ Brig. Gen. Kershaw’s and Brig. Gen. Wofford’s Brigades which advanced in front and on the left flank the Brigade retired with the Division and resumed its former place in Corps line.</p>
<p>July 3. Constructed entrenchments and remained in former position until the close of the battle.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

The 8th and 2D Regiments and 3D Battalion shared in the attack on Peach Orchard and batteries near there on Wheatfield Road. The 7th and 3D Regiments were engaged in the long and severe conflict at and around the Loop. The 15th Regiment fought on Rose Hill and in the ravine and forest beyond. Late in the evening the Brigade took part in the general advance by which the Union forces were forced from the Wheatfield and across Plum Run Valley. At dark under orders it retired to Peach Orchard.</p>
<p>July 3. At Peach Orchard until noon then sent farther to front. At 1 P. M. under orders resumed position here extending line to right and keeping in touch with Hood’s Division on left.</p>
<p>July 4. About midnight began the march to Hagerstown Md.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Rough hewn stone monument with bronze plaque affixed to the front. It was erected in 1970 and dedicated on November 21, 1970.  Polished &#038; rough hewn monolith, 40&#8243; wide, 9&#8243; thick, 48&#8243; high. Bronze inscription tablet, 28&#8243;x30&#8243;, affixed to to east face of marker.</p>
<p><strong>Inscription:</strong> It reads,  Kershaw’s Brigade / Brigadier General Joseph B. Kershaw’s / South Carolina Brigade of McLaws’ Division / ordered on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 / to attack the Union battle line north and / east of the Rose Farm 100 yards eastward / crossed the Emmitsburg Road in this area / by nightfall their attack joined with / those of other Confederate brigades had / forced the Union troops from the Peach / Orchard and Wheatfield. <p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 3.30 P. M. and formed line 50 yards west of this. Advanced about 5 P. M. in support of Kershaw and Anderson and took a prominent part in the severe and protracted conflict on Rose Hill and in the ravine and forest east of there and in the vicinity of the Loop. Participated also in the general advance late in the evening by which the Union forces were forced out of the Wheatfield and across Plum Run Valley. Brig Gen. Paul J. Semmes fell mortally wounded in the ravine near the Loop.</p>
<p>July 3. During the afternoon Anderson’s Brigade being withdrawn for duty elsewhere the Brigade was left in the occupancy of the woodland south of the Wheatfield. At 1 P. M. under orders it resumed its original position near here.</p>
<p>July 4. About midnight began the march to Hagerstown Md.</p>
<p>Present about 1200 Losses 430</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Iron tablet denotes advanced position of the brigade during the battle. Erected in 1907.  Cast iron tablet, 3&#8217;8&#8243; x 3&#8217;4&#8243;, with raised inscription painted in a contrasting color and mounted on fluted cast iron post. All 4&#8217;4&#8243; H. Cast by Calvin Gilbert. <p><STRONG>Location:</STRONG> Located near northwest limits of Rose Woods, west of the regimental monument of the 64th New York Volunteers.  Near Rose&#8217;s Run.  This monument is marked on the map above by a RED pushpin.</p>
<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Captain Fuller was born in 1841 in Cattaraugus County. He joined the 64th New York at age 20 as a private, eventually rising to the captaincy of F company. His promotions to both first lieutenant and captain were for conspicuous bravery and gallantry in battle. The monument was dedicated in July 1894 and erected by the surviving members of the regiment.  Marks the location where Captain Henry Fuller was killed on July 2, 1863.   Marker is a rough hewn granite monolith with a slanted, polished face that contains a bronze inscription tablet. Overall height is 2.6 feet.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/2-1.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>64th New York Infantry</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>First Cattaraugus Regiment</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/brooke">Brooke&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/caldwell/">Caldwell&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/ii-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1290.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. Daniel G. Bingham (1827-1864).  Lawyer from Ellicottville.  Wounded at Seven Pines and on July 2.  He died of disease on July 21, 1864.  Maj. Leman W. Bradley (1820-1912) took command.   He was a cutlery dealer in Hudson.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Four-sided shaft stands on a square pedestal on a tiered base. Relief elements include the Connecticut coat of arms, the insignia of the Union II Corps and a trefoil. An eagle with outstretched wings tops the monument. Monument is a 2.3 foot square granite obelisk topped with a bronze eagle and set on a six foot square triple layered base. Overall height is 20.9 foot. The obelisk has a raised cut trefoil insignia of the Second Corps on the north side and an inscription tablet on the south face. Flanking marker has a polished slant face, 1.6 foot square.  It was placed by the Regimental Association and cost $950.00. It is one of five monuments to the 27th Connecticut at Gettysburg. </p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  It marks the place where Col. Henry Merwin was killed while leading the regiment through the field towards Rose Grove. </p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Rectangular monument with a peaked cap stands on a rough-hewn base. Relief elements include the State of Connecticut coat of arms, crossed muskets and crossed sabers. The State of Connecticut appropriated $1,000 for the work on April 17, 1889. It was placed and dedicated on October 27, 1889. It marks the advanced position of the 27th Connecticut. “Erected by the Commonwealth of Connecticut As a Memorial to the Valor of Her Loyal Sons.” </p>

Monument is a 3.2 foot square granite shaft with an apex cap with crenellation topped with a bronze statue of an infantryman in an overcoat set on a six foot square rough hewn base. Overall height is 18.2 foot. The shaft has inscription panels on the west, south, and east. Flanking markers are apex topped, one foot square.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Full-length uniformed infantryman stands atop a tapered pedestal and base. The figure is in a combat stance, holding his musket upright in both hands. A bronze relief of the State Seal is affixed to the front of the pedestal, directly below the figure. There is also a trefoil corps insignia on the right face of the pedestal. Monument is a 3.4×2.4 foot granite shaft topped with a bronze statue of an infantryman with a musket set on a 6.5 foot square hammered base. Overall height is 10.9 foot. The shaft has incised inscriptions and the state coat of arms on the south side. The flanking markers are flat topped one foot square with inscriptions of the faces</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  It indicates the position held by the 145th Pennsylvania Infantry when driving the Confederates of Kershaw’s Brigade from the edge of the wheat field. They were only able to hold the position for a short time before becoming outflanked and forced to retire. </p>
