<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived between 9 and 10 A. M. and joined the Division. Between 2 and 3 P. M. advanced with the Division and was placed in reserve in rear of Second Brigade and soon thereafter ordered to First Division except that the 5th New Jersey supported Battery K 4th U. S. on the Emmitsburg Road. The 2D New Hampshire and 7th New Jersey reported to Brig. Gen. C. K. Graham and supported batteries in the Peach Orchard the 63D Penna. on the left. The 6th New Jersey went to the support of the Second Brigade First Division on its left in Plum Run Gorge near Devil’s Den. The 8th New Jersey and 115 Penna. were sent to the Wheatfield to support the right of Second Brigade First Division. The regiments of the Brigade were severely engaged where assigned and retired at the close of the day with the organizations with which they served.</p>
<p>July 3. In the morning rejoined the Division and was placed in reserve where apparently needed.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 6 Officers 53 Men Wounded 43 Officers 333 Men Captured or Missing 78 Men Total 513</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/3-2.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>2nd New Hampshire Infantry</strong></em> served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/burling">Burling&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/humphreys/">Humphrey&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1292.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. Edward L. Bailey (1841-1930).  Clerk in the Manchester post-office.  Wounded at Williamsburg and on July 2.  Served as officer in post-war regular army until dismissed by court martial in 1893.  One of the longest surviving officers of the battle.</p>

<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. William J. Sewell (1835-1901).  Born in Ireland; merchant in Chicago, Illinois.  Wounded at Chancellorsville and on July 2.  Awarded Medal of Honor for Chancellorsville.  Post-War U.S. Senator.  Capt. Thomas C. Godfrey (1835-1867) took command from the wounded Sewell.  Godfrey was born in Philadelphia and was a painter in Allowaystown.  On July 3, Capt. Henry H. Woolsey (1837-1864) took command from Godfrey.  Woolsey was a lawyer in Trenton and graduate of Princeton.  He was slightly wounded on July 2 and was mortally wounded at Petersburg, dying the following day on June 19, 1864.</p>

<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  July 2nd this Regiment detached from the Brigade engaged the enemy here at 4:30 p.m. July 3rd in position with Division on left centre of the line present at Gettysburg 182. Killed 3. Wounded 18. Missing 3.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/3-2.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>7th New Jersey Infantry</strong></em> served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/burling">Burling&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/humphreys/">Humphrey&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1156.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. Louis R. Francine (March 26, 1837-July 16, 1863).  Mortally wounded on July 2 in battle and died two weeks later.  Francine was a civil engineer from Camden.  </p>
<p><STRONG>Number Engaged:</STRONG> 331</p>
<p><STRONG>Casualties:</STRONG> 15 killed, 86 wounded, 13 missing</p>
