<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>
<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  The monument reads,</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 1 A. M. and bivouacked for the night. Early in the afternoon formed on the right of the Division connecting with Second Corps on the right. Between 3 and 4 P. M. advanced 300 yards to the Emmitsburg Road connecting with First Division. The Brigade with the support of 5th New Jersey on the left and 15th Mass. and 82D New York on the right held the front line Second Brigade in reserve until the line on the left gave way when the Brigade with the Division changed front to the left. The Brigade then retired with the Corps by order of Major Gen. D. B. Birney commanding to the main line in the rear where it formed and forced back the pursuing forces regained the lost ground capturing many prisoners and held the position until morning.</p>
<p>July 3. The Confederate artillery opened fire at daylight which continued over an hour. At 6 A. M. the Brigade was ordered to join the Corps in the rear and then to support the Fifth Corps and at 3 P. M. to support the Second Corps. The Brigade lying in close column suffered severely from the artillery fire.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 10 Officers 111 Men Wounded 45 Officers 559 Men Captured or Missing 2 Officers 63 Men Total 790</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/3-2.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong></strong></em> served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/carr">Carr&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href=""http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/humphreys/">Humphrey&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1380.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>. </p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. Robert McAllister (1813-1891).  Engaged in railroad construction in Oxford Furnace.  Wounded on July 2.  Capt. Luther Martin (1826-1863) then took command.  Printer from Elizabeth.  Killed on July 2 after being wounded several times.  Capt. William H. Loyd (1839-1907) took command.  Stock broker in Philadelphia.  Wounded on July 2 and at the Boydton Plank Road in 1864.  Lt. John Schnoonover (1839-1930) then took command.  Teacher from Belvidere; wounded on July 2 and on June 8, 1864.  The final commander was Capt. Samuel T. Sleeper (1823-1864).  He was a tailor from Shrewsbury.  He was killed in action at Spotsylvania.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Denotes the flank right of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry&#8217;s skirmish line.  The left of the skirmish line rested on the Spangler Farm lane.  It is inscribed with a diamond, symbol of the Third Army Corps.  The monolith, with an inscription on the face, was erected in 1913.</p>

The shaft has incised inscriptions on all sides and a knapsack sculpted on the west face. Overall height is 10.6 feet. Flanking markers are one foot square with a polished flat top and inscriptions. Monument includes commemorative era fencing. </p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  The monument indicates the position held by the 26th Infantry on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 in the brigade line along Emmitsburg Road. Here they were attacked by Confederates until relieved by a division of the 2nd Corps.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  The regiment supported the skirmish line to the west of this monument from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on July 2, 1863 and held this line against an attack from the Barksdale Mississippians. </p>
<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  1ST BRIGADE, 2ND DIVISION, 3RD CORPS/UPON THIS SPOT STOOD THE 11TH MASS.//REG’T DURING THE SECOND DAYS/ BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG, JULY 2, 1863/26 WERE KILLED 93 SOUNDED AND 10 MISSING./ASSISTED BY THE STATE/AND GENEROUS FRIENDS, THE SURVIVORS/OF THE REGIMENT HAVE/ERECTED UPON THIS HISTORIC FIELD,/THIS MONUMENTAL TABLET IN THE YEAR/1885./”ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL”/11TH MASS. <p><strong>Where is it located?</strong> Located Gettysburg National Military Park, East side of Emmitsburg Road, north of Sickles Avenue intersection, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325.  Located on the east side of Emmitsburg Road north of the junction with Sickles Avenue.</p>
<p><strong>Is this monument located along the NPS Auto Tour route?</strong> Yes.</p>
<p><strong>Has this monument been moved or changed?</strong>   Originally, this monument was installed at the intersection of Emmitsburg Road and Sickles Avenue, but was moved to the north side of Sickles when Sickles Avenue was constructed in 1896.  The monument was desecrated and severely damaged on February 15, 2006. The vandalism remains un-repaired.</p>
