<p><strong>Who made it?</strong> Albert Russell &#038; Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Erected by the United States War Department.</p>
<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 7 A. M. and was massed in woods at left and rear of the line of Corps and at 10 A. M. took position forming the left of Division in column of regiments. Between 5 and 6 P. M. moved with Division to the support of Third Corps forming line of battle along a stone wall at the rear and east of the Wheatfield and advanced against the Confederate forces in the Wheatfield and in the woods at left forcing them back to the farther end of the Wheatfield and taking many prisoners when the ammunition being exhausted the Brigade was relieved by part of Second Division Fifth Corps and Second Brigade First Division Fifth Corps and retired to the stone wall and finally with Division to former position in line with Corps. Col. Cross fell mortally wounded early in the engagement.</p>
<p>July 3. Constructed breastworks early in the morning which gave protection from the cannonade in the afternoon. Remained in position until the close of the battle.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/2-1.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>61st New York Infantry</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>The Clinton Guards</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/cross">Cross&#8217; Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/caldwell/">Caldwell&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/ii-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac. <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1174.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Col. Knut Oscar Broady (1832-1922). Born in Sweden; served in the Swedish artillery and navy; was a student at Madison University at start of War.  Wounded at Ream&#8217;s Station.  Returned to Sweden after the War with the American Baptist Society.</p>

<p><strong>When was it dedicated?</strong>  July 2, 1886.</p>
<p><strong>What is it made out of?</strong>  Monument: granite with bronze adornment; Base: stone.</p>
<p><strong>What size is it?</strong>  Overall: approx. H. 6 ft. 6 in. x 8 ft. x 3 ft.</p>
<p><strong>Who made it?</strong> Hunton, J. F., fabricator.  Thos. Nahn Granite Works, fabricator.</p>
<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Costing just $600.00, the monument was designed by Major Frank Rice of the 31st Massachusetts. Although simple and perhaps unimpressive to modern visitors, the monument is meant to symbolize the men of the Granite state who were, in the words of the regimental scribe William A. Child, “hard, enduring, patient, and unmovable.” Monument comprised of an octagonal mid-section with bronze text plaques, topped by a large boulder. </p>
<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  Here July 2, 1863, from 5 p.m. till 7 the 5th N.H. Vols. stood and fought. Total engaged 182. Killed or mortally wounded 31. Total killed and wounded 81. On this spot fell mortally wounded Edward E. Cross, Col. 5th N.H. Vols. Comdg. 1st. Brigade, 1st. Division, 2nd Corps. July 2nd, 1863.</p>

<p><strong>Is this monument located along the NPS Auto Tour route?</strong> Yes.</p>
<p><strong>Has this monument been moved or changed?</strong>  Originally, the inscriptions were incised onto the octagonal sides of the granite middle marker; but when they proved difficult to read and errors were discovered, they were covered over with bronze text tablets. The tablets were added in 1901.</p>

During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/cross">Cross&#8217; Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/caldwell/">Caldwell&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/ii-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1115.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Col. Charles Hapgood (1830-1909).  Merchant in Amherst.  Wounded at Petersburg.</p>
