8th Ohio Infantry
The Eighth Ohio Infantry is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? September 14, 1887. What is it made out of? Sculpture: bronze; Base: granite. What size is it? Approx. 12 ft. 4 in. x 2 ft. 4 in. x 2 ft. 4 in.; Base: approx. 15 in. x 5 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. 6 in. Who made it? King, R. R., sculptor. New England Granite Works, fabricator. What does it depict? A granite shaft adorned at the top with a bronze sculpture of a soldier’s cap, canteen, knapsack, and blanket roll resting on top of a drum. The Fourteenth Indiana Infantry is honored by a monument and two position stone (denoting the right and left advanced flanks of the regiment) at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Oct. 28, 1885. What is it made out of? Sculpture: limestone; Base: limestone. What size is it? Sculpture: approx. 13 ft. x 4 ft. 9 in. x 4 ft. 9 in.; Base: approx. W. 7 ft. 5 in. x D. 7 ft. 5 in. Who made it? McKain, A. A., sculptor. What does it depict? Monument is a tapered four-part limestone shaft with each part separated by a deep chisel cut, topped by the company logo and set on a 7.5 foot square rough cut base with tooled edge. 7th West Virginia Infantry
The Seventh West Virginia Infantry is honored by a monument and three position stones at Gettysburg (one on East Cemetery Hill, one on Wainwright Avenue, and one at Meade’s headquarters). About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Sept. 28, 1898. What is it made out of? Figure: granite; Base: granite with bronze elements. What size is it? approx. 15 ft. x 72 in. x 45 in. Who made it? W. E. Spragg Granite and Marble Works, fabricator. What does it depict? Full-length figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands atop a tall tiered base. The figure wears a long caped coat, cap and mustache. He holds his rifle in front of him, with both hands around the barrel, the butt by his proper left foot. What does it honor? 4th Ohio Infantry
The Fourth Ohio Infantry is honored by a monument and a position marker at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? September 14, 1887. What is it made out of? Zinc. What size is it? Approx. 10 ft. x 87 in. x 87 in. Who made it? Laird, Peter B., designer. Monumental Bronze Company, founder. W. N. Miller, Deatrich & Rumner, contractor. What does it depict? Ornate pedestal stands on a simulated rough-hewn base. Relief elements on the pedestal include a State Seal, eight crossed flags, an eagle with four crossed flags and weapons and three crossed rifles. A uniformed sentry figure and shaft stands on top of the pedestal. Commissioned for $2,500 by the Veteran’s Association of the 4th Ohio, this monument is one of 20 honoring Ohio troops who participated in the Gettysburg campaign. It is …
