<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 1 The Battalion arrived on the field too late to participate in the engagement of the day. Was ordered to report to the Chief of Artillery Rodes’ Division.</p>
<p>July 2. Took position on Seminary Ridge 1/4 mile north of Chambersburg Pike. About 11 A. M. moved to the rear of Pennsylvania College and remained until night when the Battalion returned to the position of the morning.</p>
<p>July 3. Ordered to the extreme left of the Confederate line to find a position to withdraw the fire from the Confederate infantry. Opened about 12 M. firing 20 to 25 rounds. At midnight moved with Johnson’s Division to Seminary Ridge.</p>
<p>July 4. Was ordered to take position on the ridge west of town. At night took up the line of march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Ammunition expended 48 rounds. Casualties not reported.</p>

<p class="intro"><em><strong>Latimer&#8217;s Battalion</strong></em> served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2009/03/johnsons-division/">Johnson&#8217;s Division</a> in the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2010/05/ewells-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of Northern Virginia.</p>

<p><strong>When was it dedicated?</strong>  Erected circa 1910.  The last monument was completed on December 19, 1910.</p>
<p><strong>What is it made out of?</strong>  Foundation: Concrete.  Monument: Polished smooth red Maine granite.  Plaque:  Bronze.</p>
<p><strong>What size is it?</strong>  3.8 feet x 3.4 feet diameter base.  Height 5&#8217;4&#8243;.  Tablet measures 4 feet by 3 feet 8 inches and weighs 300 pounds. Overall weight is 3000 pounds.</p>
<p><strong>Who made it?</strong> Albert Russell &#038; Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Erected by the United States War Department.</p>
<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth red Maine granite pedestal with a circular base.   On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 1. After dark crossed Rock Creek and encamped on this ridge.</p>
<p>July 2. At 4 P. M. the Battalion except the 20 pounder Parrotts took position here and was engaged more than two hours in a heavy cannonade with the Union artillery on Cemetery Hill Steven’s Knoll and Culp’s Hill. Ammunition exhausted and losses severe the guns were withdrawn except four to cover the advance of Johnson’s infantry against Culp’s Hill. In the renewed firing Major S. W. Latimer was mortally wounded. In the cannonading the 20 pounder Parrotts in position half a mile north took an active part.</p>
<p>July 3. The 20 pounder Parrotts took part in the great cannonade while the other batteries were in reserve.</p>
<p>July 4. The Battalion withdrew and began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Losses Killed 10 Wounded 40 Horses killed 30.</p>

<p>July 2. Gen. Gregg with two Brigades left Hanover and took position about noon at the junction of the Hanover Road with the Low Dutch Road First Brigade on the right Third on the left connecting with the infantry pickets (the Second Brigade having been sent to Westminster). Took and held Brinkerhoff Ridge after a sharp skirmish with the 2D Virginia Infantry About 10 P. M. the two Brigades withdrew and bivouacked for the night on the Baltimore Pike a mile East of Rock Creek Bridge.</p>
<p>July 3. Took position with the right on Hanover Road. The Second Brigade Third Cavalry Division on the right. Gen. Custer having received an order from Gen. Pleasonton to rejoin his Division was relieved about 2 P. M. by the First Brigade. A large force of Confederate Cavalry under Gen. Stuart screened from view by woods having been discovered Gen. Gregg ordered Custer to remain in support of McIntosh until Confederate Cavalry could be driven back. Custer and McIntosh and the Batteries of Randol and Pennington were soon hotly engaged with the Confederate Cavalry and Artillery. About 3 P. M. Stuart made a charge with his reserves under Hampton and Fitzhugh Lee which was repulsed.This closed operations on the field.</p>

<p><STRONG>Location:</STRONG> Located at junction of Hanover Road and Hoffman Road.  This monument is marked on the map above by a RED pushpin.</p>
<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Placed 1900-1901. Marks approximate center of division as it contested part of &#8220;stonewall&#8221; Brigade during afternoon of July 2. Painted aluminum tablet, 2&#8217;6&#8243;x1&#8217;7&#8243;. All 3&#8217;6&#8243; H.  It reads as follows,</p>
<p>Units of the Union Second Cavalry Division, commanded by Brig. Gen. D.M. Gregg, were engaged here with a portion of the Confederate “Stonewall” Brigade, Johnston’s Division, from about 6 to 10 p.m. on July 2, 1863. The 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry occupied the ground to the right, the 1st New Jersey Cavalry and Company A, Purnell (Maryland) Legion to the left, the 10th New York Cavalry and a section of Battery H, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery were in support.</p>
<p>On July 3, the 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry of Gregg’s Division was formed here in a skirmish line which connected on the left with infantry units on Wolf’s Hill and on the right with Brig. Gen. George Custer’s Cavalry Brigade. </p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  A granite head of a horse atop a pedestal and rough-hewn base. The pedestal is smooth in the front, and rough-hewn on the remaining sides. Reliefs of the cavalry insignia are affixed the front of the base and on the upper rear of the pedestal. There is a relief of the New York State Seal on the upper front of the pedestal.  This work stands in the yard of a private home.   Monument is a two-part granite shaft of which the first part is rough cut with a bronze medallion obverse and the second part is rough cut with a smooth front face with an excised inscription and bronze medallion. A bronze horse’s head tops it. Base is 6×4.6 foot. The bronze work was designed and sculptured by Casper Buberl. </p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  The monument marks the location on Brinkerhoff’s Ridge where dismounted members of the 10th New York Cavalry fought the 2nd Virginia Infantry in the late afternoon of July 2, 1863, suffering nine casualties.</p>
<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  10TH NEW YORK/CAVALRY/3RD BRIG 2ND DIV/CAVALRY CORPS/JULY 2ND 1863 3 TO 8 P.M. </p>
<p><strong>When was this photograph taken?</strong> November 15, 2009.</p>

<p><strong>Is this monument located along the NPS Auto Tour route?</strong> No.</p>
<p><strong>Has this monument been moved or changed?</strong>  A dry laid stone retaining facing was erected by the CCC in 1937 on the embankment below the monument after the highway was regraded by the state in the late 1930s.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Marker with rounded top and sloping plinth stands on rough-hewn base. The top and sides of the marker have rough-hewn surfaces. Recessed onto the front is a bas-relief of a cannon sitting on a rutted road against a split-rail fence. There are trees on the right and in the distance. A State Seal is affixed above the bas-relief and the Corps insignia of crossed swords is on the front face of the plinth. Monument is a three-part granite shaft with a polished face and rough cut on the other three sides, and set on a 7.5×5 foot rough cut base. The shaft has incised inscriptions, a bronze medallion, a corps emblem, and a sculptured bronze bas-relief. Overall height is 10 feet. Flanking markers are one foot square.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  It indicates the position held by a section of Battery H on July 2, 1863 when they fired into the moving columns of Ewell’s Corps. </p>
