The Cavalry Corps, 2nd Division, 2nd Brigade was also known as Huey’s Brigade. During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of Gregg’s Division in the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Erected circa 1912. What is it made out of? Foundation: Concrete. Monument: Polished smooth sea-green granite. Plaque: Bronze. What size is it? 36′ by 36′ base. Weight: 300 Pounds. Height 5’4″. Tablet measures 4 feet by 3 feet 8 inches. Who made it? Albert Russell & Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Erected by the United States War Department. What does it depict? Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base. 2nd New York Cavalry
The Second New York Cavalry is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Sept. 19, 1892. What is it made out of? Sculpture: Westerly granite with bronze elements; Base: granite. What size is it? Sculpture: approx. H. 16 ft.; Base: approx. W. 7 ft. x D. 5 ft. 4 in. Who made it? Gerhardt, Karl, 1853-1940, sculptor. New England Monument Company, fabricator. What does it depict? Vertical shaft stands atop a tiered, rough-hewn base. A New York State Seal is affixed to the upper portion of the shaft and is framed by foliage. A relief of a horse’s head is at the lower portion of the shaft. What does it honor? The Sixth Ohio Cavalry is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Sept. 14, 1887. What is it made out of? Sculpture: Hallowell granite; Base: Hallowell granite. What size is it? Sculpture: approx. 9 ft. x 6 ft. 6 in. x 2 ft.; Base: approx. H. 1 ft. x W. 3 ft. 7 in. Who made it? Frederick & Field, fabricator. What does it depict? Relief of a uniformed cavalryman on a running horse appears on the face of a square marker with a pointed top and low rough-hewn base. The Eighth Pennsylvania Cavalry is honored by a monument at Gettysburg. About the Main Monument When was it dedicated? Installed ca. 1890. Dedicated Sept. 1, 1890. What is it made out of? Sculpture: Quincy granite with bronze elements; Base: granite. What size is it? Sculpture: approx. 11 ft. 3 in. x 98 in. x 34 in.; Base: approx. W. 10 ft. 7 in. x D. 5 ft. Who made it? John M. Gessler & Sons, fabricator. What does it depict? Equestrian statue of a uniformed Cavalry soldier stands on a cut boulder. Bronze elements include a carbine barrel, sword, spurs and reins. The decision to erect the monument was made during a reunion of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on the field in July 1887. The cost was approximately $3,000. The work is sited near the location of General Pleasonton’s headquarters. …
