SECOND DIVISION<br />
Brigadier General Andrew A. Humphreys</p>
<p>July 1. This Division was at Emmitsburg. Shortly after 3 P. M. marched by indirect route about two miles west of main road to Gettysburg leaving Burling’s Brigade.</p>
<p>July 2. Arrived at 1 A. M. and massed on Cemetery Ridge between Birney’s Division on the left and 2D Corp. Burling’s Brigade rejoined. Between 2 and 3 P. M. formed line of battle along the Emmitsburg Road to resist attack on Union left its right opposite left of Caldwell’s Division 2D Corps its left joining Birney’s Division. Carr’s Brigade on the right Brewster’s Brigade massed on the left centre Burling’s Brigade in Reserve until sent to General Birney. The Confederates made demonstrations on the Division front which remained in position after the 5th and 6th Corps had arrived on the Union left until about 6 P. M. when McLaws’ Division following the Confederate oblique order of battle broke Birney’s line at the Peach Orchard uncovering the left of Humphreys who changed front to connect with 2D and 5th Corps troops in the Wheatfield. That line enfiladed by the enemy fell back across Plum Run while Humphreys outflanked by McLaws’ Division and pressed by Anderson’s Division Hill’s Corps gradually retired to Cemetery Ridge reformed on 2D Corps left and drove the Confederates beyond the Emmitsburg Road recovering abandoned artillery capturing many prisoners and holding the advanced position during the night.</p>
<p>July 3. Division moved to different points in the rear of the 1st 2D 5th and 6th Corps supporting threatened positions.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 28 Officers 286 Men Wounded 140 Officers 1422 Men Captured or Missing 2 Officers 214 men Total 2092</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 1 A. M. and bivouacked for the night. In the morning took position between Birney’s Division on the left and the Second Corps facing Emmitsburg Road. Between 2 and 3 P. M. advanced to the Emmitsburg Road. Carr’s Brigade at first in line along the road Brewster’s Brigade in reserve. Burling’s Brigade at first in reserve and then except the 5th New Jersey sent to Gen. Birney. The Division was attacked by McLaws’ and Anderson’s Divisions and by sunset was compelled to retire to the first position occupied where it reformed on the left of Second Corps and drove back the Confederate forces beyond the Emmitsburg Road and recovered the artillery that had been abandoned and captured many prisoners and held the position during the night.</p>
<p>July 3. About sunrise moved to the rear and left and was supplied with rations and ammunition. Burling’s Brigade joined the Division moved to different points in rear of the First Second Fifth and some Sixth Corps in support of threatened positions. Suffered some loss in the afternoon from Confederate artillery.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 1 A. M. and bivouacked for the night. Near 1 P. M. formed in rear of First Brigade the 73D being advanced to the crest of the hill in front. The Brigade advanced between 2 and 3 P. M. the 71st and 72D to the left of First Brigade the 70th and 120th in reserve. Later the 73D was sent to the support of First Brigade First Division. Fiercely attacked toward sunset and the forces on the left having fallen back the Brigade retired and after sunset again advanced and captured the colors of the 8th Florida and thirty prisoners and recaptured guns that had been left on the field. Again retired and formed in rear of a Brigade of Second Corps and bivouacked for the night.</p>
<p>July 3. Moved further to the rear and was supplied with rations and ammunition. About 3 P. M. moved to support batteries in front.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 12 Officers 120 Men Wounded 50 Officers 523 Men Captured or Missing 73 Men Total 778</p>

<p class="intro2">At Gettysburg</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Colonel William Root Brewster (July 27, 1828 – December 13, 1869) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War who commanded a regiment  in the famed Excelsior Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. He later commanded the brigade, including at the Battle of Gettysburg where Brewster and his men were overrun by Confederates while defending the Emmitsburg Road position of the ACW not far from the Peach Orchard.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived between 9 and 10 A. M. and joined the Division. Between 2 and 3 P. M. advanced with the Division and was placed in reserve in rear of Second Brigade and soon thereafter ordered to First Division except that the 5th New Jersey supported Battery K 4th U. S. on the Emmitsburg Road. The 2D New Hampshire and 7th New Jersey reported to Brig. Gen. C. K. Graham and supported batteries in the Peach Orchard the 63D Penna. on the left. The 6th New Jersey went to the support of the Second Brigade First Division on its left in Plum Run Gorge near Devil’s Den. The 8th New Jersey and 115 Penna. were sent to the Wheatfield to support the right of Second Brigade First Division. The regiments of the Brigade were severely engaged where assigned and retired at the close of the day with the organizations with which they served.</p>
<p>July 3. In the morning rejoined the Division and was placed in reserve where apparently needed.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 1 A. M. and bivouacked for the night. Early in the afternoon formed on the right of the Division connecting with Second Corps on the right. Between 3 and 4 P. M. advanced 300 yards to the Emmitsburg Road connecting with First Division. The Brigade with the support of 5th New Jersey on the left and 15th Mass. and 82D New York on the right held the front line Second Brigade in reserve until the line on the left gave way when the Brigade with the Division changed front to the left. The Brigade then retired with the Corps by order of Major Gen. D. B. Birney commanding to the main line in the rear where it formed and forced back the pursuing forces regained the lost ground capturing many prisoners and held the position until morning.</p>
<p>July 3. The Confederate artillery opened fire at daylight which continued over an hour. At 6 A. M. the Brigade was ordered to join the Corps in the rear and then to support the Fifth Corps and at 3 P. M. to support the Second Corps. The Brigade lying in close column suffered severely from the artillery fire.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/3-2.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong></strong></em> served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/carr">Carr&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href=""http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/humphreys/">Humphrey&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1380.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>. </p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Col. Robert McAllister (1813-1891).  Engaged in railroad construction in Oxford Furnace.  Wounded on July 2.  Capt. Luther Martin (1826-1863) then took command.  Printer from Elizabeth.  Killed on July 2 after being wounded several times.  Capt. William H. Loyd (1839-1907) took command.  Stock broker in Philadelphia.  Wounded on July 2 and at the Boydton Plank Road in 1864.  Lt. John Schnoonover (1839-1930) then took command.  Teacher from Belvidere; wounded on July 2 and on June 8, 1864.  The final commander was Capt. Samuel T. Sleeper (1823-1864).  He was a tailor from Shrewsbury.  He was killed in action at Spotsylvania.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Denotes the flank right of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry&#8217;s skirmish line.  The left of the skirmish line rested on the Spangler Farm lane.  It is inscribed with a diamond, symbol of the Third Army Corps.  The monolith, with an inscription on the face, was erected in 1913.</p>

Moved to Aikens Landing October 1. Duty in trenches before Richmond until March 3, 1865. Battle of Fair Oaks October 27-28, 1864. Moved to Fort Monroe, Va., March 4-5; thence to White House Landing March 18 to establish a depot for General Sheridan&#8217;s Cavalry, and duty there until March 24. March to lines north of the James March 24-28. Occupation of Richmond April 3. Duty there and at Manchester until July. Provost duty in District of Northern Neck, Dept. of Virginia, until December. Mustered out December 19, 1865.  Regiment lost during service 15 Officers and 163 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 6 Officers and 166 Enlisted men by disease. Total 350.</p>
