What does it depict? A standing portrait of General Reynolds holding a pair of binoculars in his proper right hand and resting his proper left hand on the handle of his sword. The sculpture rests atop a tall, square base adorned on the front with a shield bearing the stars and stripes. This monument was one of the first erected in memory to an officer, and was funded with $12,200 raised by the members of his command. This monument is a heroic-sized bronze statue of Reynolds standing on a tapered, square pedestal that rests on a granite base. It is located at the juncture of the east and west branches of the main walkway. Reynolds holds a sword in his left hand and binoculars in his right. An inscription on the west side of the pedestal contains Reynolds’ name. The south side of the pedestal is engraved with “Killed at Gettysburg July 1, MDCCCLXIII.” Inscribed on the east is the statement “To His Memory By The First Army Corps” beneath which is a raised polished granite disc divided into three segments representing the three divisions of the First Corps

General Information

Brief Biography: John Fulton Reynolds (September 20, 1820 – July 1, 1863) was a career United States Army officer and a general in the American Civil War. One of the Union Army’s most respected senior commanders, despite having a relatively limited amount of combat experience in the war, he played a key role in committing the Army of the Potomac to the Battle of Gettysburg and was killed at the very start of the battle.

Von Steinwehr’s Division served as a member of the Eleventh Corps in the Army of the Potomac.

July 1. Arrived about 2 P. M. and went into position on Cemetery Hill supporting Battery I First New York Artillery and covered the commanding position there skirmishers taking possession of a church and near by house to prevent occupancy by Confederate sharpshooters. The First and Third Divisions having advanced in a line extending from Rock Creek to Mummasburg Road to connect with right of First Corps became hotly engaged with Hoke’s and Hays’s Brigades. Early’s Division moved toward town in rear of the Union right and the First Brigade was sent to hold them. The Brigade retreated through town and joined the Second Brigade about 4.30 P. M.

July 2. Heavy artillery firing from 4 to 6 P. M. Between 8 and 9 P. M. the Division was attacked by Hays’s Louisiana Brigade which penetrated to Battery I First New York Light Artillery and was repulsed with great loss.

July 3. Not engaged but subject to the fire of sharpshooters and artillery.

The 33D Mass. was detached during the battle and placed on the right of the Corps under the command of Brig. Gen. A. Ames. The 136th New York was on the extreme left of the Corps connecting on its right with the 55th and 73D Ohio.

July 2. Sharpshooting was kept up all day by the Union troops from stone walls and by the Confederates from houses in the town with considerable loss.

July 3. Sharp skirmishing continued with artillery firing from Confederate batteries east of the town.

Commander: Colonel Orland Smith (May 2, 1825 – October 3, 1903) was a railroad executive and a brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War. In 1864, he led a spirited bayonet charge during the Battle of Wauhatchie that took a significant Confederate position on a hill that now bears his name.

The Third Volunteer Brigade was also known as Huntington’s Brigade. During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of the Artillery Reserve, Army of the Potomac.

What does it depict? A kneeling Union officer is tending to a wounded Confederate officer. The wounded figure is reclining against a knapsack. The sculpture stands on a rectangular base, which in turn, stands on a circular base. There are benches around the monument and steps on each side leading to a walkway which surrounds the piece of three sides. The whole is surrounded by a semi-circular wall with the names of 29 states incised on each panel.

What does it honor? The memorial depicts a kneeling Union officer — Henry Bingham of Hancock’s staff — tending to wounded Confederate General Lewis Armistead.

About the Main Monument

When was it dedicated? 1904-1912. Dedicated Jan. 24, 1912. Rededicated Nov. 20, 1967.

What is it made out of? Granite and Bronze.

Who made it? Bush-Brown, Henry K., 1857-1935, sculptor. Van Amringe Granite Company, fabricator.

What does it depict? A bronze bust of Lincoln rests on a granite pedestal in the center of a curved granite wall. Flanking the bust are two rectangular bronze plaques, one inscribed with the Gettysburg Address and one inscribed with the text of a letter to Lincoln. The memorial cost $5,000. It was designed by Louis Henrick. Disagreements over where to place the monument delayed the completion of the monument which was originally slated to be erected to commemorate the Gettysburg Address as part of the 1895 bill introduced by General Dan Sickles that created the Gettysburg National Military Park. Stars above the plaque symbolize the states which remained loyal to the Union. It has truncated obelisks flanking a central granite slab that back a bronze Lincoln bust mounted on a pedestal. The central slab and obelisks are joined by elliptical granite walls on which are mounted bronze tablets inscribed with the Gettysburg Address and David Wills’ invitation to Lincoln to attend the cemetery dedication. The flanking walls contain a frieze with a relief of five-pointed stars and battle-axes.

What does it depict? Bust of Charles Collis stands on a pedestal which is placed in the center of a two-stepped exedra. The figure wears a double-breasted military uniform and has short hair and a mustache. Sculpture was erected by surviving members of the 114th Pennsylvania Regiment and by friends of Charles Collis (1838-1902) after his death. Colonel Collis was the commander of the regiment, also known as “Collis Zouaves.” The regiment fought the battle in the Peach Orchard on the second day of the Gettysburg battle. He resided in Gettysburg after the war and his house, Red Patch, still stands. This is the only personal memorial erected within the Civil War interment section. Special authorization for the memorial was granted by the Secretary of War.

General Information

Brief Biography: Brevet Brigadier-General CharlesT. Collis is the highest ranking soldier buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Collis was a Medal of Honor recipient for the battle of Fredericksburg. Wounded at Chancellorsville, he was not present at the battle of Gettysburg. After the war Collis built a summer house in Gettysburg known as “Red Patch.” It still stands on Seminary Ridge along West Confederate Avenue.

What does it depict? Monument consists of five allegorical figures on a center column structure and a star-shaped base. It contains a sixty-foot-high granite pedestal set on a twenty-five-foot-square stone base. Liberty stands atop the column, a female figure in Classical robes holding a laurel wreath in her proper right hand and a sword in her proper left hand. Eighteen bronze stars, one for each state whose citizens fought in the Union army, encircle the upper portion of the column. The four remaining figures are seated at the base of the column. They personify War, History, Peace and Plenty. War is a bearded, uniformed Civil War Soldier. History is a female figure in Classical robes, a garland around her head and a book in her lap. She records the achievements of the battle and the names of the honored dead. Peace is an American mechanic in work clothes holding a mallet in his proper right hand and a cogwheel at his feet. Plenty is a female figure with fruits of the earth and abundance as the soldier’s crowning triumph and a sheaf of wheat. A bronze eagle in relief appears on the front center of the column. Relief items relevant to each figure appear on their respective chairs. Commissioned under the auspices of the Gettysburg National Cemetery Association, this was the first monument erected in the battlefield. This monument is the only memorial in the cemetery to be erected as part of Saunders’ plan. It is a central focal point on the high ground from which the semicircular rows of graves radiate. The monument was meant to tell a story of peace and plenty under freedom and the blessings of liberty following a heroic struggle.
