<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 1. Arrived with the Corps. All the batteries engaged except Battery I 1st New York on Cemetery Hill. The artillery retired and took position on Cemetery Hill west of the Baltimore Pike except Battery K 1st Ohio sent to the rear disabled and Battery 1 1st New York on East Cemetery Hill.</p>
<p>July 2. The Brigade was reinforced in the morning by five batteries from the Reserve Artillery</p>
<p>July 3. At 1 P. M. the Confederate artillery opened a terrific front and enfilading fire from the right followed by an infantry charge and on which the artillery of this command was concentrated with great effect. The Brigade lost one gun captured one gun disabled and two dismounted.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  The monument marks the location, now Gettysburg College near Huber Hall, of Captain Lewis Heckman’s Battery astride Carlisle Pike on July 1, 1863 as they repulsed the enemy. They were ordered to hold position while the 11th Corps retreated. </p>

<p>July 1. Arrived at Gettysburg about 11 A. M. Advanced and took position two sections on Barlow’s Knoll the left section detached near Almshouse. Engaged Confederate infantry and artillery on right and left. Lieut. Wilkenson fell early mortally wounded and the command devolved on Lieut. Bancroft. The sections were compelled to change positions several times. Retired about 4 P. M. one section relieving a section of Battery I 1st Ohio on Baltimore Street in covering the retreat. About 5 P. M. took position on Cemetery Hill.</p>
<p>July 2. Moved to rear of Cemetery facing Baltimore Pike. In action at the Cemetery from 4.30 P. M. until 7 P. M.</p>
<p>July 3. About 2 P. M. two sections were engaged in the Cemetery until the repulse of the Confederates.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 1 Officer and 1 Man Wounded 11 Men Missing 4 Men</p>
<p>Ammunition Expended 1400 rounds 31 Horses Killed</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> One of 45 monuments erected to units of the United States regular army on the battlefield. Red granite monolith with gabled top and rough hewn sides and back consists of polished Jonesboro granite 24 by 50 inches and 7 feet high.  Set upon a concrete foundation with a descriptive 3&#8217;6&#8243;x3&#8217;7&#8243; bronze tablet and the coat of arms of the United States in bronze.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/11.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>4th U.S. Artillery, Battery G</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>Howe&#8217;s Battery</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/osborn">Osborn&#8217;s Brigade</a> in the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/xi-corps/">Eleventh Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Bayard Wilkenson (1844-1863).  Born in Albany; father was war correspondent with the New York Tribune.  Mortally wounded on July 1 and died during the night.  Lt. Eugene A. Bancroft (1825-1910) took command.  Born in Boston; book-keeper in Chicago.</p>

<p><STRONG>Raised:</STRONG> The original unit was organized in 1821. The men came mainly from Cook County, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri. At the outbreak of the Civil War, this unit was stationed at Fort Randall in the Nebraska Territory.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/11.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>13th New York Independent Battery of Artillery</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>Baker&#8217;s Brigade Artillery</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/osborn">Osborn&#8217;s Brigade</a> in the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/xi-corps/">Eleventh Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. William Wheeler (1836-1864).  Graduate of Yale and lawyer in New York City.  Killed in action at Marietta, Georgia.</p>

<p>July 1. Arrived at Gettysburg before noon and went into position west of the Carlisle Road. Engaged with two Confederate batteries which were finally silenced with a loss of five gun carriages. A Confederate rifled battery having opened fire Wheeler’s Thirteenth New York battery was added to the command of Capt. Dilger and a fierce artillery duel ensued. About 4 P. M. retired to take position on Cemetery Hill. One section was posted on Baltimore street above the square in town to cover the retreating infantry until relieved by two pieces of Battery G Fourth U. S. Artillery. At 5 P. M. took position in the cemetery next the Baltimore Pike facing westerly. Remained there until the close of the battle. One gun disabled.</p>
<p>Casualties Wounded 13 Men</p>
<p>28 Horses killed.</p>

During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/osborn">Osborn&#8217;s Brigade</a> in the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/xi-corps/">Eleventh Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monument that has two flanking wrought iron rifled cannons mounted on cast iron carriages. Monument is a granite shaft with four columns and a gable top with a bronze state seal on the west face and set on a 6.2 foot square three-part smooth cut base. The shaft has excised inscriptions on the west and east sides and a bronze bas-relief on the west face. Overall height is 10.4 feet. Granite marker with bronze battle scene relief affixed to the front face. The relief depicts an artillery unit loading a cannon. It is framed by columns which support a decorative cap on which is affixed a State Seal. The marker stands on a tiered base.</p>
