<p>July 2. Upon the advance of the 3D Corps between 2 and 3 P. M. the 4th N. Y. Battery was posted near Devil’s Den, Battery D, 1st N. Y. in the Wheatfield. Battery B, 1st N. J. near the Peach Orchard north of Wheatfield Road; Battery E, 1st R. I. on same road near the right of First Division and Battery K, 4th U. S. near the left of Second Division.</p>
<p>About 3.30 P M. Lt. Colonel F. McGilvery brought from the Artillery Reserve the 9th Mass. Battery, which was posted on the Wheatfield Road east of the Peach Orchard; 5th Mass. Battery (1Oth N. Y. Battery attached) within a 100 yards of 9th Mass. Battery and 15th N. Y. Battery to the east side of the Peach Orchard.</p>
<p>Later and during the battle, there was brought up Penna. Battery C &#038; F, which took position at the salient in the Peach Orchard, and Battery F &#038; K, 3D U. S. posted near the Roger House. Battery I, 5th U. S. was brought from 5th Corps and relieved Battery G, 1st New York.</p>

<p><STRONG>Location:</STRONG> Sickles Avenue, Excelsior Field.  Located on West side of North portion of Sickles Avenue, between United States Avenue and Wheatfield Road at Excelsior Field.  This monument is denoted on the map above by a RED pushpin.</p>
<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> One of 74 brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the War Department. The pedestals consist of sea-green granite with a square 36” x 36” base; they weigh 3500 pounds. On each pedestal is mounted a bronze tablet with rounded corners weighing 300 pounds. Bronze inscription tablet, 4”0’ x 3’8”, attached to slant face of polished sea green granite monolith. 3’0” squared base of monument tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet. All 5’4” H.  Text is as follows,</p>

<p>July 1. This Division was at Emmitsburg covering roads from Fairfield and Gettysburg. Shortly after 3 P. M. marched to Gettysburg leaving De Trobriand’s Brigade.</p>
<p>July 2. This Brigade rejoined. At about 7 A. M. Birney relieved Geary’s 2D Division 12th Corps, his left resting near Little Round Top, his right joining Humphreys on Cemetery Ridge. Picket line holding Emmitsburg road. Shortly after 2 P. M. Division wheeled to the left occupying high ground from Plum Run to Peach Orchard and thence along Emmitsburg Road to the Sherfy House, Wards Brigade on the left, De Trobriand’s in the centre, and Graham’s on the right. Burling’s Brigade Humphreys’ Division in reserve near Birney’s centre. Confederate artillery opened at 3 o’clock. Soon after, three brigades of Hood’s Division attacked Ward on Birney’s left, extending later to De Trobriand. These attacks were successfully resisted. At 5:30 P. M. two brigades of McLaw’s Division attacked Birney’s right and centre. Two brigades of 5th Corps advanced to the rocky knoll at De Trobriand’s right but withdrew after a brief contest. Here occurred the first break in Birney’s line. Movement against south face of the Peach Orchard checked by batteries in Birney’s right centre. The Confederates renewed their attack on Birney’s centre. Caldwell’s Division 2D Corps now arrived, and, with troops from the 5th Corps, relieved Birney except at the Peach Orchard. About 6:30 P. M. Birney’s right at the Peach Orchard was attacked on both fronts and broken opposite Sherfy House after stubborn resistance. Through this gap the Confederates swept forward crushing Birney’s right which rejoined its Division.</p>
<p>July 3. The Division was held in reserve and detachments moved to threatened points.</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

M. and took part in the assault on the Peach Orchard and adjacent positions vigorously pursuing the Union forces as they retired. The 21st Regiment pushed on past the Trostle House and captured but were unable to bring off 9th Mass. Battery and I Battery 5th U. States. The other Regiments inclining more to the left pressed forward to Plum Run where they encountered fresh troops and a fierce conflict ensued in which Brig. Gen. Wm. Barksdale fell mortally wounded.</p>
<p>July 3. Supported artillery on Peach Orchard Ridge. Withdrew from the front late in the afternoon.</p>
<p>July 4. In position near here all day. About midnight began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Present 1598 Killed 105 Wounded 550 Missing 92 Total 747</p>

The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived about 1 A. M. and bivouacked for the night. Near 1 P. M. formed in rear of First Brigade the 73D being advanced to the crest of the hill in front. The Brigade advanced between 2 and 3 P. M. the 71st and 72D to the left of First Brigade the 70th and 120th in reserve. Later the 73D was sent to the support of First Brigade First Division. Fiercely attacked toward sunset and the forces on the left having fallen back the Brigade retired and after sunset again advanced and captured the colors of the 8th Florida and thirty prisoners and recaptured guns that had been left on the field. Again retired and formed in rear of a Brigade of Second Corps and bivouacked for the night.</p>
<p>July 3. Moved further to the rear and was supplied with rations and ammunition. About 3 P. M. moved to support batteries in front.</p>

<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Colonel William Root Brewster (July 27, 1828 – December 13, 1869) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War who commanded a regiment  in the famed Excelsior Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. He later commanded the brigade, including at the Battle of Gettysburg where Brewster and his men were overrun by Confederates while defending the Emmitsburg Road position of the ACW not far from the Peach Orchard.</p>

<p>July 2. About 4.30 P. M. arrived and took position north of Little Round Top 5.30 moved to the front at the Peach Orchard. On the advance of the Confederates driving back the infantry the Battery was retired across Plum Run near the Trostle House and fired shell and canister at the approaching Confederates until the Battery disabled by loss of men and horses was captured by the 21st Mississippi Infantry. It was almost immediately recaptured with the assistance of the 39th New York Infantry and being unserviceable was taken to the Artillery Brigade.</p>

<p>July 2. Engaged in the Peach Orchard retired about dark and reported to Brig. General R. O. Tyler Artillery Reserve.</p>
<p>July 3. Ordered early to the front and took position in the Battalion on the left of Battery E. 5th Massachusetts. Directed by Maj. General Hancock to open on the Confederate batteries with solid shot and shell. Upon the advance of the Confederate infantry fired shell and shrapnel and canister when the line was within 500 yards. A second line advancing was met with double canister which dispersed it. The fire of the Battery was then directed against the artillery on the Confederate right and several caissons and limbers were exploded by the shells.</p>
<p>July 4. Remained in this position until noon.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 3 Men Wounded 2 Officers and 11 Men Total 16</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/artillery.gif" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>15th Battery, New York Artillery</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong></strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/mcgilvery/">McGilvery&#8217;s Brigade</a> in the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/artillery-reserve/"> Artillery Reserve</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Capt. Patrick Hart (1827-1892).  Served in U.S. Regular Army.  Wounded on July 3 and again during the Overland Campaign.  </p>
<p><STRONG>Number Engaged:</STRONG> 4 Napoleon cannons and 99 men</p>
<p><STRONG>Casualties:</STRONG> 3 killed, 13 wounded</p>

Monument is a two foot square polished granite shaft that is topped with a bronze statue of a Zouave and set on a three foot square smooth base. The shaft has inscriptions on all sides and a bronze state seal on the south face. Overall height is 12.8 foot. Flanking marker is one foot square with an apex top.</p>

<p><strong>Where is it located?</strong> Located Gettysburg National Military Park, West side of Emmitsburg Road, in front of Sherfy House, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania 17325.  Located on the west side of Emmitsburg Road in front of the Joseph Sherfy farm house. It is enclosed with a cast iron fence. </p>
<p><strong>Is this monument located along the NPS Auto Tour route?</strong> No.</p>
<p><strong>Has this monument been moved or changed?</strong>  This was one of the monuments damaged by vandals in February 2006 (other monuments damaged the same night included Smith’s New York Battery and that of the 11th Massachusetts). Fortunately, unlike with the other two monuments, the damage to the 114th Pennsylvania Monument was easily repaired and the monument is now fully restored.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Indicates position of 114th Pennsylvania Infantry on the afternoon July 3, 1863 in support of Cowan&#8217;s 1st NY Battery.  Shaft, rough-cut monolith with bronze tablet set in diamond pattern of the Third Corps.</p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/3-1.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>114th Pennsylvania Infantry</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>Collis&#8217; Zouaves</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/graham">Graham&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/birney/">Birney&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Col. Frederick Cavada (1832-1871).  Wounded at Fredericksburg and captured at Gettysburg.  A native of Cuba, he was appointed U.S. Consul and became the Chief General of the Cuban forces against Spain.  He was captured and executed in 1871.  </p>

<p><STRONG>Casualties:</STRONG> 9 killed, 86 wounded, 60 missing</p>
