<p><strong>When was it dedicated?</strong>  Erected circa 1910.  The last monument was completed on December 19, 1910.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth red Maine granite pedestal with a circular base.   On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

Carolina Infantry</p>
<p>July 1. Crossed Willoughby Run about 3.30 P. M. with its left in Reynolds Woods and advancing relieved Heth’s line. Took a prominent part in the struggle by which the Union forces were dislodged from Seminary Ridge and pursuing them into town captured many prisoners. The Rifle Regiment was on duty as train guard and not in the battle of this day.</p>
<p>July 2. Supported artillery south of Fairfield Road. At 6 P. M. advanced a battalion of Sharpshooters which skirmished with Union outposts until dark. At 10 P. M. took position on Ramseur’s right in the Long Lane leading from the town to the Bliss House and Barn.</p>
<p>July 3. In the same position and constantly engaged in skirmishing.</p>
<p>July 4. After night withdrew and began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Present about 1600 Killed 100 Wounded 477 Total 577</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>Description and Notes: One of 74 brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. Monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.</p>
<p>Pedestals: Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square 36″ by 36″ base. Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet. On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet measuring 4’0″ x 3’8” with rounded corners weighing 300 pounds.</p>
<p>Each brigade monument stands 5’4″ high and weigh 3,500 pounds. Completed between 1911 and 1912.</p>

<p>July 2. Late in the evening ten of the guns were placed in position at different points ready for service next day. The Howitzers were kept in the rear as no place was found from which they could be used with advantage.</p>

<p>July 4. In the evening about dusk began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Killed 2 Wounded 24 Missing 6 Total 32</p>
<p>Ammunition expended 657 rounds. Horses killed or disabled 17</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 3. Engaged most of the day in severe skirmishing and exposed to a heavy fire of artillery. After dark retired to this Ridge.</p>

<p>July 1. The Division moved about 8 A. M. in the direction of Gettysburg following Heth’s division. A line of battle was formed on the right and left of the Pike 3 miles from the town. About 3 P. M. a part of Ewell’s Corps appeared on the left and the Union forces making a strong demonstration an advance was ordered. Heth became vigorously engaged. The Division moved to the support passing through the lines forced the Union troops to Seminary Ridge. The Division reformed on the Ridge the left resting on Fairfield Road.</p>
<p>July 2. In position on the ridge not engaged except heavy skirmishing along the line.</p>
<p>July 3. During the morning two Brigades ordered to report to Lieut. Gen. Longstreet as a support to Gen. Pettigrew and were placed in rear of right of Heth’s Division which formed a portion of the column of assault. The line moved forward one mile in view of the fortified position on Cemetery Ridge, exposed to severe fire. The extreme right reached the works but was compelled to fall back. The Division reformed where it rested before making the attack.</p>
<p>July 4. The Division during the night took up the line of march.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 262 Wounded 1312 Missing 116 Total 1690</p>

<p class="intro"><em><strong>Scales&#8217; Brigade</strong></em> served as a member of <a href=http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2009/07/penders-division/">Pender&#8217;s Division</a> the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2009/11/hills-corps-anv-iii-corps/">Third Corps</a>, Army of Northern Virginia.</p>
<p class="secondary"><strong>About the Main Monument</strong></p>
<p><strong>When was it dedicated?</strong>  Erected circa 1910.  The last monument was completed on December 19, 1910.</p>
<p><strong>What is it made out of?</strong>  Foundation: Concrete.  Monument: Polished smooth red Maine granite.  Plaque:  Bronze.</p>
<p><strong>What size is it?</strong>  3.8 feet x 3.4 feet diameter base.  Height 5&#8217;4&#8243;.  Tablet measures 4 feet by 3 feet 8 inches and weighs 300 pounds. Overall weight is 3000 pounds.</p>
<p><strong>Who made it?</strong> Albert Russell &#038; Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts.  Erected by the United States War Department.</p>
<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth red Maine granite pedestal with a circular base.   On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

13th 16th 22nd 38th North Carolina Infantry</p>
<p>July 1. Crossed Willoughby Run about 3.30 P. M. relieving Heth’s line and advancing with left flank on Chambersburg Pike took part in the struggle until it ended. When the Union forces made their final stand on Seminary Ridge the Brigade charged and aided in dislodging them but suffered heavy losses. Gen. A. M. Scales was wounded and all the field officers but one were killed or wounded.</p>
<p>July 2. In position near here with skirmishers out in front and on flank.</p>
<p>July 3. In Longstreet’s assault the Brigade supported the right wing of Pettigrew’s Division. With few officers to lead them the men advanced in good order through a storm of shot and shell and when the front line neared the Union works they pushed forward to aid it in the final struggle and were among the last to retire.</p>
<p>July 4. After night withdrew and began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Present about 1250 Killed 102 Wounded 381 Missing 116 Total 599</p>

<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 1. Crossed Willoughby Run about 3.30 P. M. and advanced on the right of the Division in the final and successful movement against the Union forces on Seminary Ridge held back Union Cavalry which threatened the flank and had a sharp conflict at the stone wall on Seminary Ridge just south of Fairfield Road.</p>
<p>July 2. Lay with its right in McMillan’s Woods with skirmish line advanced.</p>
<p>July 3. In Longstreet’s assault the Brigade supported the centre of Pettigrew’s Division advancing in good order under the storm of shot and shell and when near the Union works north of the Angle pushed forward to aid the fragments of the front line in the final struggle and was among the last to retire.</p>
<p>July 4. After night withdrew and began the march to Hagerstown.</p>
<p>Present 1355 Killed 41 Wounded 348 Missing 271 Total 660</p>
