What does it depict? A standing portrait of General Reynolds holding a pair of binoculars in his proper right hand and resting his proper left hand on the handle of his sword. The sculpture rests atop a tall, square base adorned on the front with a shield bearing the stars and stripes. This monument was one of the first erected in memory to an officer, and was funded with $12,200 raised by the members of his command. This monument is a heroic-sized bronze statue of Reynolds standing on a tapered, square pedestal that rests on a granite base. It is located at the juncture of the east and west branches of the main walkway. Reynolds holds a sword in his left hand and binoculars in his right. An inscription on the west side of the pedestal contains Reynolds’ name. The south side of the pedestal is engraved with “Killed at Gettysburg July 1, MDCCCLXIII.” Inscribed on the east is the statement “To His Memory By The First Army Corps” beneath which is a raised polished granite disc divided into three segments representing the three divisions of the First Corps

Brief Biography: John Fulton Reynolds (September 20, 1820 – July 1, 1863) was a career United States Army officer and a general in the American Civil War. One of the Union Army’s most respected senior commanders, despite having a relatively limited amount of combat experience in the war, he played a key role in committing the Army of the Potomac to the Battle of Gettysburg and was killed at the very start of the battle.

The sculpture is installed on a rectangular base made of polished granite. Surrounding the monument is a flagstone plaza adorned with two mahogany granite benches. The portrait was modeled from life in the year he died. Flagstone surrounding the monument was added in Oct. 1963 and mahogany granite benches were added to the site on Nov. 20. 1965. A dedicatory plaque was later added. Woolson, of Duluth, Minnesota, was the last surviving member of the Union Army. He did not fight at Gettysburg.

The sculpture rests atop a square base adorned with a bronze New York state seal on the right side and a 12th Corps Star on the left side. The sculpture was authorized by the State of New York on May 13, 1903. The amount of $8,000 was appropriated for the monument, but only $6,863.32 was spent and the remainder was returned to the state treasury. The base was designed by A. J. Zabriskie and was constructed by Booth Brothers and Hurricane Isle Granite Company of New York. The bronze inscription plaques, New York state seal, and corps star were cast by John Williams, Inc.

General Information

Brief Biography: Brig. Gen. George Sears Greene (May 6, 1801 – January 28, 1899) was a civil engineer and a Union general during the American Civil War. He was part of the Greene family of Rhode Island, which had a distinguished military record for the United States. His greatest contribution during the war was his defense of the Union right flank at Culp’s Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg. As a civilian, he was a founder of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Architects and was responsible for numerous railroads and aqueduct construction projects in the northeastern United States. He was buried in Warwick, Rhode Island under a 2-ton boulder taken from the crest of Culp’s Hill.

John Burns was a civilian soldier at the battle of Gettysburg.

What does it depict? A portrait of Gettysburg resident John Burns standing on the skirmish line on First Day’s Field. He is dressed in civilian clothes and carries his musket in his proper right hand. The sculpture is mounted on a square granite boulder adorned with a bronze Pennsylvania state seal on the side and an inscription plaque on the front. On July 1, 1863, John Burns joined Col. Owen Wister’s 150 Pennsylvania Infantry on the skirmish line near where the sculpture is installed. The granite boulder was selected and cut by Col. E. B. Cope. The monument was raised by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Bureau used a photograph of Burns to model the face. The monument cost $1,500.00.

What does it depict? A standing portrait of General Warren holding binoculars in his raised proper right hand. The sculpture rests on a boulder atop Little Round Top near the Union line later occupied by the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry. Members of Warren’s former command, the 5th New York Infantry, spearheaded the monument project. All of the money was privately raised. The boulder upon which the monument sits is all considered part of the memorial and visitors to the Park are forbidden to climb upon it (though many still do anyway). A bronze tablet was added by the War Department to prohibit visitors from climbing on the boulder in 1890. A bronze inscription tablet is located on the northwest face of the boulder and the word “Warren” is cut into the top of the boulder. Overall height is 8.4 feet. It was erected at the cost of $5,000.00.

What does it honor? General Warren is portrayed looking over the battlefield as he did on July 2, 1863 when he ordered the Union troops to defend Little Round Top from advancing Confederate troops.

Brief Biography: General Gouverneur Kemble Warren (January 8, 1830 – August 8, 1882) was a civil engineer and prominent general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is best remembered for arranging the last-minute defense of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg and is often referred to as the “Hero of Little Round Top.”

Father William Corby was the chaplain of the Irish Brigade at Gettysburg.

What does it depict? A standing portrait of Father Corby with his proper left hand on his chest and his proper right hand raised in a blessing. His hat and gloves rest on the ground near his proper left foot. The sculpture is installed on top of a stone boulder. The monument was erected using funds raised by Maj. St. Clair Mullholland (commander of the 116th Pennsylvania at Gettysburg), mainly from the Catholic community. Tradition states that the statue is placed upon the actual boulder on which Corby performed the Absolution. An identical copy of this statue is located at Notre Dame. It was dedicated in 1911.

What does it honor? The memorial marks the spot where Father Corby granted absolution to soldiers of the Union II Corps prior to their entering battle in the Wheatfield.

Commanded: Corby was the chaplain of the 88th Pennsylvania. A Catholic priest, Corby requested he be allowed to speak to the men of the Brigade before they entered battle in the Wheatfield. Corby climbed atop a boulder and requested that God grant them courage. He then pronounced a general absolution.

Brief Biography: Rev. William Corby, CSC (October 2, 1833 – December 28, 1897) was a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Fr. Corby served twice as President of the University of Notre Dame. The school’s Corby Hall is named for him, and a statue of him similar to that at Gettysburg stands outside this building on the Notre Dame campus.

The monument is located on the First Day’s Battlefield, near the center of the line held by Wadsworth’s Division during the opening engagement. The base was designed by Edward Pearce Casey and was fabricated by the National Granite Company. The base is made of dark Barre granite. Overall height is 19.2 feet.

Brief Biography: General James Samuel Wadsworth (October 30, 1807 – May 8, 1864) was a philanthropist, politician, and a Union general in the American Civil War. He was killed in battle during the Battle of the Wilderness of 1864.

What does it depict? A standing portrait of General Buford looking out to the west as he did in 1863 when three thousand cavalrymen of his division prepared to meet the advance of Robert E. Lee’s army. He holds a pair of binoculars in his raised proper right hand. The monument was funded by Jerome B. Wheeler. The Buford Memorial Association was formed in 1888 and during design discussions, John Calef, who had commanded a horse artillery battery under General Buford, suggested that the design incorporate four ordnance rifles that were in the battery. One of the ordnance rifles was number 233, the rifle that fired the first Union artillery shot of the battle under Buford’s direction. The Army Chief of Ordnance located the rifle tubes and donated them to the monument committee. At the dedication ceremony, Major Calef symbolically spiked the four rifle tubes. Overall height is 15.6 foot.

Brief Biography: John Buford, Jr. (March 4, 1826 – December 16, 1863) was a Union cavalry officer during the American Civil War, with a prominent role at the start of the Battle of Gettysburg. Professional soldier, USMA 1848. Buford died just six months after the battle from Typhoid Fever. The bronze statue to cavalry division commander John Buford is located near the Reynolds equestrian on the Chambersburg Pike. This seems especially appropriate because Reynolds and Buford worked closely together to choose this ground as the battlefield.

Brig. Gen. Francis Channing Barlow commanded the First Division of the Eleventh Corps at Gettysburg.

The sculpture rest atop a tall square adorned with an inscription plaque on the front and a round plaque on the back depicting the XI Corps insignia. The memorial is installed in the vicinity where Barlow was assailed on his right flank and forced back to the Alms House from which he rallied his command, but was seriously wounded. The base was designed by Edward Pearce Casey and was fabricated by John Swenson Granite Company. Overall height is 18.7 foot. Located in vicinity where Brig. Gen. Barlow’s right flank was assailed and forced back to the Alms House.

Brief Biography: General Francis Channing Barlow (October 19, 1834 – January 11, 1896) was a lawyer, politician, and Union General during the American Civil War. Brief Biography: Abner Doubleday (June 26, 1819 – January 26, 1893) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War. USMA 1842. He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was his finest hour, but his relief by Maj. Gen. George G. Meade caused lasting enmity between the two men. His nickname was “Forty-Eight Hours.” One of the persistent legends of baseball history is that Doubleday invented the game in 1839, although he was in West Point at the time.
