The New York State Coat of Arms appears in relief on the protruding center structure which is surmounted by a eagle with wings spread upward. The names of forty-one officers who commanded units at Gettysburg are listed. Granite walk to the monument that is 8×14 foot with two, eight-inch risers. Monument is a semi-circular granite shaft twenty-four foot in diameter topped by a spread wing eagle and set on a central projecting node base. The shaft is incised with inscriptions, excised coat-of-arms, and incised commanders’ names in the circular wall part. </p>

<p><STRONG>Brief Biography:</STRONG> Chairman of the Gettysburg National Park Commission 1893 – 1922. Under his auspices, many of the monuments, including the markers that denote the location of each brigade, division, and corps, as well as the location of the field hospitals, were completed and placed.  Nicholson also fought at Gettysburg as a member of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry.</p>

<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  A bronze bust of Lincoln rests on a granite pedestal in the center of a curved granite wall. Flanking the bust are two rectangular bronze plaques, one inscribed with the Gettysburg Address and one inscribed with the text of a letter to Lincoln. The memorial cost $5,000. It was designed by Louis Henrick. Disagreements over where to place the monument delayed the completion of the monument which was originally slated to be erected to commemorate the Gettysburg Address as part of the 1895 bill introduced by General Dan Sickles that created the Gettysburg National Military Park. Stars above the plaque symbolize the states which remained loyal to the Union. It has truncated obelisks flanking a central granite slab that back a bronze Lincoln bust mounted on a pedestal. The central slab and obelisks are joined by elliptical granite walls on which are mounted bronze tablets inscribed with the Gettysburg Address and David Wills’ invitation to Lincoln to attend the cemetery dedication. The flanking walls contain a frieze with a relief of five-pointed stars and battle-axes.</p>

<p><strong>When was it dedicated?</strong>  1908.</p>
<p><strong>Who made it?</strong> Erected by the U.S. War Department.</p>
<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Bronze tablet attached to the polished face of a rough hewn granite monolith. Overall height is 7 feet. Similar marker to Corps and Division markers; contracted to Bureau Bros for bronze casting, Van Amringe Granite for monolith. References Park’s establishing law, acreage granted from GBMA, and the names of Commissioners. </p>
<p><strong>How is it inscribed?</strong>  The monument reads,</p>
<p>Established by Act of Congress approved February 11, 1895 by which the Secretary of War was authorized to receive all lands and improvements which belonged to the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association, a corporation chartered by the State of Pennsylvania 1864 to acquire other lands on the Battlefield for the purposes of the Park (not exceeding in area the parcels shown on the map prepared by Major-Gen Daniel E. Sickles U.S.A. and then on file in the office of the Secretary of War) which subject to the supervision and direction of the Secretary of War should be in charge of the Commissioners theretofore appointed by him under Act of Congress approved March 3 1893 and their successors.</p>
<p>The Commissioners were directed to ascertain and definitely mark the lines of battle of all troops engaged in the battle of Gettysburg within the limits of the Park or adjacent thereto subject to the approval of the Secretary of War.</p>
<p>522 1/4 acres of land were conveyed by the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association to the United States pursuant to the act of 1895.</p>
<p>The Secretaries of War under whose approval the work has been done were Daniel S. Lamont, Russell A. Alger, Elihu Root, and Wm. H. Taft.</p>
<p>The Commissioners were Lieut. Colonel John P. Nicholson, Chairman, Penna., John B. Bachelder, Mass. and Brig-General Wm. H. Forney, Alabama appointed by the Secretary of War under the Act approved March 3, 1893. General Forney died January 16 1894, Major Wm. M. Robbins of North Carolina was appointed March 13 1894. Mr. Bachelder died December 22, 1894. Major Charles A. Richardson of New York was appointed April 25, 1895. Major Robbins died May 3, 1905. Major-Gen. Lunsford L. Lomax of Virginia was appointed May 17, 1905.</p>

<p><STRONG>Brief Biography:</STRONG> Brevet Brigadier-General CharlesT. Collis is the highest ranking soldier buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Collis was a Medal of Honor recipient for the battle of Fredericksburg.  Wounded at Chancellorsville, he was not present at the battle of Gettysburg.  After the war Collis built a summer house in Gettysburg known as &#8220;Red Patch.&#8221;  It still stands on Seminary Ridge along West Confederate Avenue.</p>
