<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Cast iron tablet with raised inscription painted in contrasting colors, mounted on fluted cast iron post. 4.4 feet high. Tablet 3.8 x 3.4 feet, inscription narrates events associated with Battery during Battle.   Iron tablet denotes advanced position of the brigade during the battle. Text reads as follows,</p>

<p>June 29. Engaged in picketing scouting and patrolling westerly and northerly to Hagerstown. Finding no Confederate force Gen. Buford with the First and Second Brigades recrossed the mountains and encamped near Fairfield.</p>
<p>June 30. Arrived at Gettysburg at 11 A. M. as a detachment of Heth’s Confederate Division was about to enter but withdrew on the approach of the two Brigades of the Division. Gen. Buford deployed his Cavalry along the ridge east of Willoughby Run between the Mummasburg and Fairfield Roads with pickets well advanced.</p>
<p>July 1. Was attacked between 8 and 9 A. M. by Heth’s Division and Pegram’s Artillery Battalion which were held in check until the arrival of First Corps. The Second Brigade picketed the approaches from the north and retarded the advance of Ewell’s Corps until Eleventh Corps arrived. About 4 P. M. retreated to Cemetery Hill and formed on left of town and bivouacked for the night in front of Little Round Top.</p>
<p>July 3. Started in the morning for Westminster to guard Army trains. The Reserve Brigade Cavalry Corps arrived about noon on the Emmitsburg Road and engaged for four hours the Confederate right.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 1 Officer 27 Men Wounded 12 Officers 104 Men Captured or Missing 6 Officers 268 Men Total 418</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG>  Cast iron tablet with raised inscription painted in contrasting color and mounted on fluted cast iron post; 4.4 feet high; tablet 3.8&#8242; x 3.4&#8242;, has been cracked and repaired. Located on Cashtown-Gettysburg Road at Cashtown Inn. Originally located on ground west of inn; moved by private owner of inn in 1991.  Text is as follows,</p>

<p>July 1. Arrived about 11 A. M. The First Brigade took position in field on the left of Reynolds Woods. Second Brigade on Chambersburg Pike relieving Second Brigade First Division. These brigades were actively engaged from 2 to 4 R M. and retired with the Corps and took position south of the cemetery fronting Emmitsburg Road. The Third Brigade joined at dusk.</p>
<p>July 2. At sunset sent to support of Third Corps on its right at Emmitsburg Road and captured 80 prisoners and recaptured 4 guns.</p>
<p>July 3. In position on left of Second Division Second Corps. Assisted in repulsing Longstreet’s assault capturing many prisoners and three stand of colors.</p>

<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday (June 26, 1819 – January 26, 1893) was a career United States Army officer and Union  general in the American Civil War. He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was his finest hour, but his relief by Maj. Gen. George G. <p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.</p>

<p>July 2. Marched from near Greencastle Pa. to Chambersburg Pa.</p>
<p>July 3. The Brigade marched from Chambersburg Pa. via Cashtown to Fairfield Pa. Met the 6th U. S. Cavalry about two miles from Fairfield. The 7th Virginia charged in the advance and was repulsed. The 6th Virginia in support charged and forced the Union Regiment to retire with heavy loss. The Brigade encamped at Fairfield for the night.</p>
<p>July 4. The Brigade held the mountain passes and picketed the left flank of the Army.</p>

<p>June 30. Started early for Gettysburg and encountered two Mississippi regiments and a section of artillery and after a short skirmish proceeded to Gettysburg when a detachment of Major Gen. Heth’s Division about to enter the town withdrew towards Cashtown leaving pickets four and a half miles from Gettysburg.</p>
<p>July 1. Between 8 and 9 A. M. Confederates advanced in force from Cashtown. The Brigade dismounted and with Battery A 2D U. S. Artillery held its position for more than two hours against infantry and artillery in superior numbers and until Major Gen. J. F. Reynolds arrived with First Corps after which the Brigade was engaged on the left of the infantry On retiring to the Cemetery Hill the Brigade took position left of the town with Second Brigade and later in front of Little Round Top.</p>
<p>July 2. Relieved by Third Corps and marched to Taneytown en route to Westminster.</p>

<p>July 1. Arrived and went into position about 11. 30 A. M. left of Reynolds’s Woods. The 151st Penna. having been sent to reinforce Second Brigade on right of Reynolds’s Woods. The remaining regiments with Battery B 1st Penna. formed line facing west and held this position until near 4 P. M. when being pressed with superior numbers in front and outflanked on the left the Brigade retired to Seminary Ridge. On the withdrawal of the Corps the Brigade retired to Cemetery Hill and formed on the left along Taneytown Road and remained there until noon the next day.</p>
<p>July 2. Between 5 and 6 P. M. the Brigade was moved to the left centre from which First Division Second Corps had been taken to support Third Corps.</p>
<p>July 3. Remained in the same position and assisted in repelling Longstreet’s assault in the afternoon taking many prisoners. At 6 P. M. withdrew to former position on Taneytown Road.</p>

<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Colonel Chapman Biddle (January 22, 1822 – December 29, 1880) was a member of the prominent Biddle family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who rose to fame as an officer in the Union Army in the American Civil War. He commanded a brigade of infantry  at the Battle of Gettysburg.  </p>
