Perry’s Brigade served as a member of Anderson’s Division in the Third Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. The brigade is honored by a monument and an advanced position tablet.

About the Main Monument

When was it dedicated? Erected circa 1910. The last monument was completed on December 19, 1910.

What is it made out of? Foundation: Concrete. Monument: Polished smooth red Maine granite. Plaque: Bronze.

What size is it? 3.8 feet x 3.4 feet diameter base. Height 5’4″. Tablet measures 4 feet by 3 feet 8 inches and weighs 300 pounds. Overall weight is 3000 pounds.

Who made it? Albert Russell & Sons Co. of Newburyport, Massachusetts. Erected by the United States War Department.

What does it depict? Monolith consisting of polished smooth red Maine granite pedestal with a circular base. On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.

What does it honor? One of 64 Confederate brigade monuments. Designed by E. B. Cope and erected by the U.S. War Department. They indicate the general location of the centers of the various Confederate brigades and artillery battalions during several phases of the battle. Some of the tablets were made from melted down Civil War cannon. The tablets describe the itinerary and movements of each brigade.

July 2. Formed line in forenoon in the eastern border of these woods. Advanced at 6 P. M. and assisted in forcing the Union line on the Emmitsburg Road and by rapid pursuit compelled the temporary abandonment of several guns. At the foot of the slope met fresh Union forces and the line on its right retiring it also fell back. The colorbearer of the 8th Florida fell and its flag was lost.

July 3. Ordered to join Wilcox’s Brigade on its left and conform to its movements. Supported artillery until Longstreet’s column started and then advanced in aid of his assault. But dense smoke hiding his oblique course the Brigade moved directly forward. In the gap caused thereby a strong force struck its left flank capturing about half of the 2nd Florida and its colors.

July 4. In line here and at dark began the march to Hagerstown.

July2. Arrived about sunset and bivouacked on the western border of Spangler’s Woods.

July 3. In the forenoon formed line on Kemper’s left in the field east of the woods. At the cessation of the cannonade advanced and took part in Longstreet’s assault on the Union position in the vicinity of the Angle. This advance was made in good order under a storm of shells and grape and a deadly fire of musketry after passing the Emmitsburg Road. The lines were much broken in crossing the post and rail fences on both sides of that road but with shattered ranks the Brigade pushed on and took part in the final struggle at the Angle. Gen. R. B. Garnett fell dead from his saddle in front of the stone wall.

July 4. Spent the day in reorganization and during the night began the march to Hagerstown.

July 3. Reached the field about 9 A. M. Near 12 M. took position beyond crest of hill on which the artillery was placed. About 1.30 P. M. Division was formed in an open field east of Spangler’s Woods the right near a barn facing the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. At 3 P. M. moved forward to assault across the field about three fourths of a mile under severe fire losing many officers and men only a few reaching the salient. The Division being separated from its support on the right and left and the assault having failed returned to its former position on the ridge.

July 4. The Division took up the line of march during the night.

July 3. In the forenoon formed line behind Kemper and Garnett east of the woods. When the cannonade ceased advanced to support Kemper’s and Garnett’s Brigades forming the right of Longstreet’s Corps. Its losses being less at first than those of the other brigades it passed the Emmitsburg Road in compact ranks and as the front line was going to pieces near the stone wall pushed forward and many of its men and some from other commands responding to the call and following Gen. L. A. Armistead sprang over the wall into the Angle and continued the desperate struggle until he fell mortally wounded beyond the stone wall.

Monument Title: Memorial stone to General Armistead

Photographed: August 17, 2008.

Location: The Angle. Located in the Angle area, West of Cushing’s Battery. This monument is denoted on the map above by a RED pushpin.

Description: First marker erected to commemorate fallen Confederate commander. This marker was first proposed on May 5, 1887 and approved on July 12, 1887. Dedicated in 1888. The Thomas Nawn Company was the fabricator. The monument was initially refused by the GBMA because it violated the “Line of Battle Rule.” However, numerous markers to fallen Union commanders had already been placed without regard for the battle line rule; this fact won on appeal and the Armistead marker was erected within the Angle. It is simply inscribed, Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead C.S.A. fell here July 3, 1863.

Marker is a granite shaft designed to simulate an opening scroll with an incised inscription on the face and set on a two foot square smooth cut base. Overall height is 4.6 feet.

Monument Title: Armistead and Hancock Monument

Location: George Spangler Farm on the Hospital Road. This monument is denoted on the map above by a BLUE pushpin.

Description: Dedicated February 18, 2000 and erected by the Armistead Marker Preservation Committee. It is inscribed, Friends and fellow officers in the United States Army prior to 1861, the fate of Civil War made them foes on the battlefield at Gettysburg. Confederate Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead and Union Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock were both wounded in Longstreet’s assault (Pickett’s Charge), July 3, 1863. Here at the Union Army 11th Corps Field Hospital (George Spangler Farm), Armistead died of his wounds on July 5, 1863. Northwest of this marker is the site of the Granite School House, a Union field hospital, where Hancock was initially treated for his wounds. Hancock survived the war, and became a well-known military, political, and civic leader. He died on active military duty at Governor’s Island, New York, February 9, 1886.

July 2. Arrived about sunset and bivouacked on the western border of Spangler’s Woods.

July 3. In the forenoon formed line in the field east of the woods with right flank near Spangler’s Barn. At the close of the cannonade advanced and took part in Longstreet’s assault upon the Union position in the vicinity of the Angle. Exposed to a severe fire of artillery and vigorously assailed beyond the Emmitsburg Road by infantry on the right flank with ranks thinned and much disorganized by its losses especially of officers it pressed on against the Union line at the stone wall where after a fierce encounter the struggle ended. Gen. J. L. Kemper fell wounded in front of the stone wall.

July 4. Spent the day in reorganization and during the night began the march to Hagerstown.

Through some misunderstanding of orders instead of the Brigade advancing in compact ranks in support of the troops on its right in their assault on the Union lines the regiments were ordered forward at different times. Deployed as skirmishers and fighting in detachments they pushed back the Union outposts and drove some artillerists for awhile from their guns but did not join in the attack upon the Union position on Cemetery Ridge.

Monument to the state of Florida at Gettysburg.

About the Main Monument

When was it dedicated? July 3, 1963.

What is it made out of? Select Southern granite.

Who made it? Hill, J. B., designer. Bruns Monumental Co., fabricator.

What does it depict? Two granite tablet markers, one taller than the other, and a pylon decorated with laurel leaves at the top, all mounted on a three-stepped base. The taller marker has the Florida State Seal on the front and back.

What does it honor? It is placed in the area of Perry’s formation on July 2 and 3rd, 1863, prior to the attack of these Floridians on the Union line. In 1965, the monument was partially taken apart and resealed to prevent entrance of water.

How is it inscribed? Floridians of Perry’s Brigade, comprised of the 2nd, 5th and 8th Florida Infantry, fought here with great honor as members of Anderson’s Division of Hill’s Corps and participated in the heaviest fighting of July 2 and 3, 1863. The Brigade suffered 445 casualties of the 700 men present for duty.

Like all Floridians who participated in the Civil War, they fought for the ideals in which they believed, by their noble example of bravery and endurance, they enable us to meet with confidence any sacrifice which confronts us as Americans

About the Main Monument

When was it dedicated? Commissioned March 9, 1908. Cast 1912. Installed 1913. Dedicated June 8, 1917.

What is it made out of? Sculpture: bronze; Base: Mt. Airy granite.

What size is it? Sculpture: approx. H. 41 ft.; Base: approx. 24 ft. x 10 ft. x 13 ft. 7 in.

Who made it? Sievers, Frederick William, 1872-1966, sculptor. Kappes, Charles, contractor. Tiffany and Company, founder. Van Amringe Granite Company, fabricator.

What does it depict? An equestrian portrait of General Robert E. Lee stands atop a rectangular granite monument that is adorned on the front with a large bronze figure group depicting Virginia troops. General Lee holds the horse’s reins in his proper left hand and holds his hat in his proper right hand. On the base figure group, the central figure is an equestrian soldier holding a Confederate flag. To the left of him are two soldiers with rifles standing guard, and one soldier aiming a pistol. To the right of him is a soldier swinging a bayonet, a soldier about to aim his rifle, and a soldier blowing a bugle. It is the first state monument erected at Gettysburg by a former member of the Confederacy, and is installed on Seminary Ridge near where General Robert E. Lee watched Longstreet’s assault on July 3, 1863. The Virginia State Monument is the largest and most expensive Confederate monument on the battlefield. It was also the first monument erected to honor Confederate soldiers at Gettysburg. The sculpture of Lee on Traveller stands 14′ tall. The pedestal itself rises 28 feet.
