This post is a photo study — it highlights a few selected winter Gettysburg battlefield photographs taken around sunset.

One reason I wanted to highlight some of these pictures is how unique the views they offer probably are to many of my visitors. Although people who live in Gettysburg all year round are blessed to see the battlefield in all conditions, for those of us who live a fair distance away, our visits are understandably fewer. On the days most of these images were taken, I was the only photographer (or one of just a few) actually out taking pictures in the cold. So I think they are fairly unique from that standpoint. Gettysburg just isn’t as popular in the winter as it is during the other seasons.

And even if you’re not a Gettysburg buff, I at least hope you can enjoy the beauty of the place, which of course stands in stark contrast to the horrible things that transpired here 145 years ago.

(By the way I suffered to get that last picture of Warren’s statue in the snow — my fingers don’t have good circulation, it was bitterly cold, we had to hike up the hill because the road was closed … and by the time I got back to the car my fingers hurt so bad I couldn’t move them! Hopefully the pictures are worth it and I hope you enjoy these rather unique and different views of the battlefield in the wintertime.)

Not the greatest of sunsets, but some interesting light effects. This morning everything is shrouded in fog. The temps are summer like and the trees are just starting to turn.

sunset last night

Sunset last night was absolutely gorgeous. I took pictures — and they turned out really nice — but they don’t do it justice. Really. It was one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen at Gettysburg. We drove around basically in a circle since Little Round Top (our usual sunset haunt) was closed. We drove down West Confederate Avenue, then out the Emmitsburg Road (South Confederate is closed), then up either United States Avenue or the Wheatfield Road, back to Hancock Avenue or Sedgwick Avenue, and around past the Angle. I described it simply as “splendiferous.”

The sun is shining right now but it is cold. It is also supposed to rain later. I didn’t run today due to my side pain. Again, I hope its the Hodge waning. I’m only running now when I WANT to run, and so when motivation wanes or I don’t feel quite right, I don’t.

Everything else is good — I had a big cheeseburger last night at Ruby Tuesday and ate almost all my fries. And that after Kilwin’s ice cream for lunch! I do have a small sore on my tongue (being on my tongue it feels HUGE), but other than that and some dry skin, I am good and looking forward to another day on the battlefield.
