<p><strong>When was this photograph taken?</strong> December 9, 2011.  Monument faces mainly west.  This photograph is of the monument from the south and west corner.</p>

<p><strong>Where is it located?</strong> Sickles Avenue, the Loop. Located on the south side of Sickles Avenue at the Loop, near monuments to the 22nd and 32nd Massachusetts.</p>
<p><strong>Is this monument located along the NPS Auto Tour route?</strong> Yes.</p>
<p><strong>Has this monument been moved or changed?</strong>  Sadly, this monument has suffered from frequent incidences of vandalism.  In June 1992, the cap was chipped and the head severed from the monument. The head was reattached in 1993.  In February 2012, the monument was vandalized again with blue spray pain.</p>

<p class="intro">The <em><strong>2nd Company, Massachusetts Sharpshooters</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>Andrews Sharpshooters</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/2007/09/22nd-massachusetts-infantry/">22nd Massachusetts</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/tilton/">Tilton&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/barnes/">Barnes&#8217; Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/v-corps/">Fifth Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Raised:</STRONG> At large from the state of Massachusetts.</p>
<p><STRONG>Regimental History ~ Dyer’s Compendium of the War of the Rebellion:</STRONG></p>
<p>Organized at Lynnfield September 3, 1861. Left State for Washington, D.C. Attached to 22nd Massachusetts Infantry. (See this Regiment.) Mustered out October 17, 1864.</p>

<p>July 2. In position in column with the Division and Corps on the Baltimore Pike near Rock Creek until after 4 P. M. then moved with the Division left in front to the support of Third Corps line the Third Brigade having been detached to occupy Little Round Top. The Brigade preceded by Second Brigade crossed Plum Run and the Wheatfield and went into position on the high ground on the edge of woods facing westerly and southerly toward the Rose House Second Brigade on the left. The Brigade was sharply attacked by Brig. Gen. Kershaw’s Brigade and in compliance with orders from Brig. Gen. J. Barnes it retired to the rear and right to the woods across the Wheatfield Road and later to a line extending northerly from Little Round Top.</p>
<p>July 3. Relieved Third Brigade on Little Round Top.</p>
<p>July 4. Remained in position until close of battle except a reconnaissance in front.</p>

<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Colonel William Stowell Tilton (February 1, 1828 – March 23, 1889) was an American businessman and soldier who led a regiment, and occasionally a brigade, in the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. He and his men were heavily engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg, where Tilton&#8217;s performance created controversy.</p>

The shaft is set atop a rough-hewn base on a boulder. The monument was constructed sometime prior to Nov. 27, 1888 and was dedicated on June 12, 1889. Monument is a 2.4 foot square granite shaft with an apex top set on a four foot square rough hewn base that rests on a boulder. Overall height is nine foot. Shaft has sculptured reliefs of infantry accoutrements and a bronze state seal on the north face. Inscriptions are on the east and west sides and a Maltese cross is located on the south face. Flanking markers are one foot square. </p>

<p><STRONG>Location:</STRONG> Big Round Top.  Located on the northwest slope of Big Round Top along the old War Department trail to the summit.  Can be accessed by walking behind the 9th Massachusetts Monument, or taking a single-track trail along the stonewall as you approach the summit.  Marked by a RED pushpin on the above map.</p>
<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG> Granite monument decorated on front with relief of Maltese cross and shocks of corn, and at top capped with sculpture of a knapsack propped against cannon balls.  This monument was dedicated on Dedicated Sept. 8, 1884.  Base is three foot square. Overall height is eight foot. </p>
<p><strong>Inscription:</strong> 118TH/PENN VOLS/CORN EXCHANGE REGT./1ST BRIGADE/1ST DIVISION 5TH CORPS/ARMY OF THE POTOMAC. ENGAGED IN ADVANCE/OF ‘WHEATFIELD’ JULY 2,/AND HELD THIS POSITION/JULY 3 AND 4, 1863. </p>

During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/tilton">Tilton&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/barnes/">Barnes&#8217; Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/v-corps/">Fifth Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="#" onClick="MyWindow=window.open('http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1193.html','MyWindow','toolbar=no,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=600,height=450'); return false;">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>

<p><strong>Notable Facts:</strong>  The 118th was known as the Corn Exchange Regiment because a bounty of $10 for each man, as well as the funds necessary for raising the regiment, were furnished by the Corn Exchange Association with their hall at 2nd and Gold Streets in Philadelphia. </p>
