<p><strong>What does it depict?</strong>  Monolith consisting of polished smooth sea-green granite pedestal with a square base.   Base tapers to a smaller dimension at the tablet.  On each pedestal is mounted a bronze inscription tablet describing the movements and actions of the unit.</p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  One of 74 Union brigade monuments erected at Gettysburg by the United States War Department to describe the movements and itinerary of each Union brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The monuments were designed by E.B. Cope.  Many of the inscription tablets were made of bronze melted down from Civil War cannons.</p>

<p>July 2. Arrived early in the morning and formed on right of Second Brigade on line from Cemetery Hill to Round Top. Between 5 and 6 P. M. advanced with Division to left and entered the Wheatfield and the woods on its right in line of battle forcing the Confederates through the field and the woods to the further end. Brig. Gen. Zook fell mortally wounded in this advance the Brigade being on the right of Division it extended to an open field on the west. The line of Third Corps on the Emmitsburg Road having been forced back and the Division having been flanked by superior forces on its right and left the Brigade retired with the Division and resumed in line with Corps.</p>
<p>July 3. Constructed entrenchment and held the position until the close of battle.</p>
<p>Casualties Killed 7 Officers 42 Men Wounded 18 Officers 209 Men Captured or Missing 4 Officers 78 Men Total 358</p>

Granite monument has rough hewn sides with a gable top that has brackets on the east side and sets on a 6.6×5.4 foot rough hewn base. Overall height is eleven foot. The monument has a bronze state seal, crossed musket, and infantry accouterments on the east side and inscriptions on the west. Flanking markers have flat tops with inscriptions, one foot square. </p>
<p><strong>What does it honor?</strong>  The monument marks the position where the 52nd New York Infantry drove back, with the Brigade, 1500-2000 Confederates on July 2, 1863. </p>

<p class="intro"><img src="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/images/corps/2-1.png" alt="" align="left" width="85" class="alignleft" />The <em><strong>52nd New York Infantry</strong></em> was also known as <em><strong>German Rangers</strong></em>.  During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/zook">Zook&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/caldwell/">Caldwell&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/ii-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.  <strong><em><a href="http://www.battlereports.goellnitz.org/?p=1382.html" title="Fighting 300 Regiment" rel="gb_page_center[650,500]">A Fighting 300 Regiment</a></strong></em>.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Col. Charles G. Freudenberg (1833-1885).  Born in Baden, Germany; came to the U.S. a few years before the Civil War.  Wounded at Fair Oaks and on July 2.  Served in post-war regular army.  Maj. Edward Ventui (1825-1863) took command from the wounded Freudenberg.  Born in Italy; wounded at Cross Keys.  Killed on July 2.  Capt. William Scherrer (ca. 1834-1864) assumed command from Ventui.  Born in Germany in 1834 or 1835; living in New York City at time War began.  Wounded at Bristoe Station.  Mortally wounded on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania, dying two weeks later.</p>

During the battle of Gettysburg, it served as a member of <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/zook">Zook&#8217;s Brigade</a> in <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/caldwell/">Caldwell&#8217;s Division</a> of the <a href="http://www.drawthesword.goellnitz.org/tag/ii-corps/">Second Corps</a>, Army of the Potomac.</p>
<p><STRONG>Commander:</STRONG> Lt. Col. Alford B. Chapman (1835-1864).  Merchant of &#8220;fancy goods&#8221; in New York City.  Wounded at Fredericksburg and killed in action at the Wilderness.</p>

<p><STRONG>Description:</STRONG>  Rectangular monument has an apex cap, beaded plinth and low relief of the trefoil corps insignia. Monument is a 3.7 foot square granite shaft topped with a sculpture of regimental accoutrements set on a 6.4 foot square rough hewn base. Overall height is 15.7 foot. The shaft has inscription panels on all sides, and reliefs of rifles and accoutrements as well as a bronze state seal on the east side.
